In addition to the Festival as held in the covered arcade (shoten Gai), this year Kochi's Yosakoi Festival also included an earlier in the day street parade:
Apart from the organized processions of the Yosakoi Festival itself, the festivity was shared throughout Kochi as costumed participants made their way through the city. Included was at the site of the Harimaya Bridge from where the legend of the Festival originated.
The bridge, and its neighboring shop remain integral to the Yosakoi Story along with its related poem and song. It recounts a story of forbidden love between the subsequently banished Monk Junshin and his forbidden lover Ouma for whom he purchased a hairpin at the shop adjacent to the bridge that led to the disclosure of their relationship.
In 1954 when the Yosakoi Festival first originated as a way to lighten the hearts of the townspeople after the ravages of war, the song from the love story became its theme and the song's included lyrics of "Yosakoi, Yosakoi" are required to be included as chants in the songs the performers voice as they dance in the Yosakoi Festival.
This year's festival also marked the return to one in which all the townspeople could participate replacing the virtual festival from the past year and cancellations preceding that since 2020.
