Imagine ripping a 69 wax pack and pulling a razor sharp Mantle just to have it come back a PSA 7!

Seriously? I've seen 8's that don't come close to this card. It's got some tilt, but come on, 4 sharp corners, and a chip free back. I don't get it. At the moment I'm really upset with PSA, so maybe I'm jaded, but this seems way out of line. I'm stopping here before I say something that would get me banned.
That sure doesn’t look like a 7, am I missing something?
Great looking card

Looks better than most 8s.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Tough break. Looks better than a 7 to me not sure if the left to right centering kept it from an 8. Those corners are outstanding.
Beautiful card. Where'd you get the pack? Was it slabbed?
I'd crack and sub that thing ten more times until you get the 8 it deserves.
That's an amazing, razor-sharp Mantle whose qualities are self-evident. I wouldn't waste more time/money submitting through the mail, due to the risks involved in mailing etc. One of two possibilities -- either PSA sees a micro-wrinkle, perhaps in the card stock on the back, or, it's simply a mistake. I'd suggest taking it to a show PSA is holdering at and submit in person for review/explanation of the grade. I think you'll get the 8.5 or better that it deserves. Hard to be pack-fresher, and the centering is wonderful for a '69, and amazing luck that you didn't pull a more typically centered one.
As far as wrinkles, check the back border right at the baseline where the text starts "Mickey..." -- from the scan (which may not be true) it looks as though light could be reflecting off a wrinkle in the stock there. Which I still don't agree that this doesn't deserve an 8.
Another possibility (judging from the pics) is the greyish booger in the lower left hand corner of the front margin -- which is ridiculous to think that would prevent a PSA 8 or better given this card's overall quality. I really think an in-person PSA review at a show will yield better results.
Good luck getting the card what it deserves!
Crack it out and give it to a bulk submitter.
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
Prefer to buy in bulk.
Is that a print dot in the lower right corner?
A friend of mine ripped it but I bought it off of him.
I really don’t want to crack it out for fear of damaging the card.
Thinking about a review but I’m 0-12 lol
The centering at the bottom appears to be around 67/33. While that should be good enough for an 8 just barely, they may have decided that the tilt is severe enough that it mars the eye appeal.
What other cards did your friend pull from the pack?
Current obsession, all things Topps 1969 - 1972
I just did a quick measurement on the tilt and at worst it's 70/30 on the bottom which definitely falls into the 8 range.
Those corners on my screen look like 8s for sure.
What's your plan?
Probably a review... it’s just amazing a 50 year old piece of cardboard survives in this condition and the leading 3rd party expert basically says meh...
I bet if the pack was opened in front of them at a show they would grade it a 8-9.
9 is hoping for too much with the diamond centering tilt it has, but I definitely can see that card in an 8 holder for sure.
That’s right on the borderline of the 8 range:
PSA 8: Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse.
“While it's true that a large part of grading is objective, the other component of grading is somewhat subjective. The best way to define the subjective element is to do so by posing a question: What will the market accept for this particular issue? ...This issue will usually arise when centering and/or eye appeal are in question. For example, while most cards fall clearly within the centering guidelines for a particular grade, some cards fall either just within or just outside the printed centering standards. The key point to remember is that the graders reserve the right, based on the strength or weakness of the eye appeal, to make a judgment call on the grade of a particular card.”
While the card is certainly nice, with the combination of borderline centering and tilt, I don’t think it’s a slam dunk that it will end up as an 8.
Don’t get me wrong I’d be happy if it bumped to a 8. But it just goes to show that a pack fresh card does not equal a 9-10.
My friend will never rip a vintage pack again I can promise you that!
This is a good illustration at this point in time, about how difficult it is to make a profit ripping vintage wax. Here it's so fortunate to get a Mantle, and just doing some quick calculations, with a Mantle PSA 7 it still basically turned out to be around a break even or money losing proposition, presuming the rest of the pack contained commons.
Joe o has said for a long time just because it is out of the pack does not autimaticly make a card mint or gem mint. Or something to that effect.mr mint would have no doubt called this gem mint. Just think if you opened it in that time and you should feel on cloud 9. think PSA got it right. But I could see sgc giving this a 86 if you like the case. Awesome card pack fresh with for sure.
If I pulled a Mantle from a pack, I'd be like, "this is the greatest day of my life!"

Agreed. @addicted2ebay, I think your friend did not get the best possible outcome in terms of grading (I'm with the crew that think it should be an 8).
However, I do think that your friend got the best possible outcome in terms of collation. He pulled the absolute best card in the set (with the exception of the white letter variation). Part of the money that we pay for these packs is for the value of the cards in the pack, and part of the money is for the thrill of the hunt.
Congrats to your friend on the nice pull!
buying O-Pee-Chee (OPC) baseball
I think it is an 8. I would consider Jackson the best card of the set - but would love to pull that card - super exciting to get that out of a pack!! Would never have sold it if I were your friend as it would instantly remind me of the thrill of pulling it every time I looked at it.
