The Chesterfield Collection - Bowers + Ruddy Sale 1981

Does anyone have any additional information on the provenance and history of this collection?

I just purchased a so-called dollar with provenance from the April 3-4th 1981 sale and was curious as to more information on who the collector was, and how extensive the collection was. Unfortunately the catalog and price realized lists are still copyrighted, but the nice folks over at the ANA library hooked me up with the relevant pages for research.

I'm also curious if PCGS, if grading this coin, would label it ex-Chesterfield, and whether or not that means anything in terms of desirability / value.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: probably helps if I actually post the obverse and reverse...

I can't answer any of your questions, but I do like that so-called dollar! Really cool piece!

Since its Gorham, there should be record of # minted and maybe distribution. Think this was company swag? Or a day after Independence day sale. Peace Roy

It looks like a late Bryan Dollar entry in the whole "Cross of Gold' William Jennings Bryan / bimetallism / gold standard vs. free silver debate.

Yep, here's an earlier thread devoted to them

  • Thanks, all.

After doing some more research, it appears the so-called dollars I purchased are ex-Hendrickson. Purchased from the estate of the late Ruhama and Leon Hendrickson.
