Even with a door buzzer you're subject to someone walking in with a buzzed in person. Open carry is not a bad idea either.

Open carry is not a good idea, in my opinion (but I have limited experience). When was working in a shop, we had firearms 'stationed' in key locations, just in case. Fortunately, there was never an issue. The owner did not want anyone to open carry as it sent the wrong message to many of the people who came into the shop. We had a competitor in a neighboring city where each staff member had their 'big guns' on their hip. It was an impressive show of firearms ... but it scared away a lot of people. We know, because they came into our shop and told us so. We loved that they open carried.

From a safety standpoint, I am not sure what impact open carry would have other than alerting others you have ready access to a handgun. Perhaps it is a deterrent or perhaps it gives the bad guys ideas for a different plan of attach. It would be interesting to hear from the security folks here who have a lot of experience.

It would alert anyone thinking about robbing a coin shop as to which one they should avoid.

Terrible news. I think that a brick and mortar shop may not be worth the risk to be in the coin and bullion business. Much less exposure selling at shows. Probably not economically viable to hire armed guards like banks do. I fear that this will not be the last of these crimes because of the intrinsic value of the coins.

    RIP Gary Duke.

Here's the guy I got to deal with at my shop. He didn't hold anyone up - he just shot them, then robbed the place. Killed two people in Montana about 3 months after shooting me. ~12 to 15 kills. Nice guy until he wasn't.

On a serious note, how many of you brick and mortar shop owners have thought about bullet proof vests?

@frankcoins We are all very sorry this happened. I just hope it could be a learning moment for us all. Did you know what security set up the coin dealer had? May he rest in peace..

Just a buzzer unlock on the front door. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram published the photo of the bullet hole in the glass. I have included two views of the building from Google . This building is very small, crammed with display cases, I would be generous to say there was a 4 by 12 foot area of clear floor space for the customers, Gary's big desk was two steps from the front door, all the windows and the other door were boarded up and made into signs. Being able to observe people coming from cars parked in the back or side, and visitors having to walk at least 10 feet before coming face-to-face with an employee gives a few extra seconds to evaluate a possible threat.

When you see knuckleheads with face and neck tattoo's, stay away. Not that this guy had a choice. He did take one of them out though. Also, Meth heads are a dangerous bunch.

WOW! That building looks like one that was here locally "buying gold." (scrap)

    I went in once.
They had a U shaped counter setup with THEM in the middle and PUBLIC access around, behind and all over the place.
I ...tried... to tell them how awful the setup was, but they were not interested in changing a thing.

    Yes it is.

Your attitude regarding the incident is laudible, and being willing to talk about it is very appreciated. Fascinating interview/story.

I was required to meet with a psychiatrist by the State of Utah as a requirement for retribution of medical expenses. The psychiatrist kept asking me why I was there, because I didn't have any PTSD, or nightmares. He told me I had somehow already worked this out. You have to, and you have to forgive people, or you will be eaten up with rage and vengeance. My brother-in-law met him the day before he shot me, and would always get very upset when ever it was brought up.
