    You edited your post.

I guess you didn't want to show the Frazier punch of knocking down Ali?

I looked over at the coin forum, didn't see anything unusual at a quick glance, I guess I missed it.

Sounds like it was an Open Forum revival. In the good old days, a thread such as that was an everyday occurrence in the Open Forum.

i'm just glad that I never participated in any of that wicked behavior. ;)

Shockingly no but of in all threads over 5 posts on the US Coin Forum it ‘‘twas mentioned. Glicker even had to go for a mountain stroll to walk off this brouhaha and he was a peace keeper! I escaped with minor abrasions. I hope he remembered to turn left and not right at Dead Mans Pass.

I do know we need to step it up in a notch in the 2018 College Football thread. The coin guys just set the bar high. It was like the fight scene in Anchorman. There may have been over a 100 abuse flags in that thread alone. They littered the pitch. A paid for hire alt even entered the ruckus.

    Here was one excerpt

OP of the thread said to this to his foe :

I guess I’ll have to publish our PMs and let the forum decide. Stand by...

It would probably be easier explaining some of Dallas's baseball geek stats to a Cricket fan but here goes

Owner of a new 150k coin/ knowingly over graded/ wrong plastic/ a spot/ no sticker/ legendary collector/ owner of a 10 million dollar coin or was it/ shock and awe jump bid/ eccentric foe with an ax to grind/ jealousy/ PM's exposed/ bait and switch claims/ poor shipping methods/ 3 year old grudge/ antagonist alt/ popcorn/ bad advise/ egos/ slumlord/ split milk and that's just off the top of my head

I've always enjoyed collecting coins and cards.

My better enjoyment for either one goes back and forth...frankly, depending on what kind of deals are available on Ebay or elsewhere.

I enjoy both hobbies immensely, but I like getting a good deal at the same time.

However, if it's a certain coin or card I've been looking for a long time, and it's finally available, i don't mind paying a bit more for that. For example some of those "inserts" from the 60's are very tough to find available in high grade. Some may not even be extremely low pops, but those who have them, obviously don't sell them. So when one does come up for sale, i'm usually all over it. :)

Unfortunately, i don't have infinite amounts of money. A few years ago, a beautiful, and I mean BEAUTIFUL, PSA 9 1962 stamps panel came up on Ebay that i just had to have. I put in a snipe of $302 which was way higher than I thought was necessary, and some little bastige out there out bid me. I'm still hissed off about that. :/

The neat thing about that collector is he collects $500 coins as well. Maybe Glicker can post the video of the auction of the 10 million dollar coin. The consigner is a good friend of mine now. We collect the same series. Didn’t know him at the time

speaking of other streets in the neighborhood, i'll tell you what i find fascinating and, to be honest, rather sad. what do we have, 10 or so regular posters here? the motley crue we've assembled provides roughly the same amount of activity -- and unquestionably more excitement -- as the entire sports card forum. that place has become so painfully moribund that i honestly wonder if it's an outward sign of cardboard's future.

It’s funny now that you mention it. I had a pretty significant vintage high grade card sport card collection that I sold off over the last seven years. The best stuff just two years ago. 20 cards or so. I’ve been on the sports card forum maybe once or twice. I’ve always been extremely active on the coin forum. Not exactly sure why. I collected sports cards all my adult life. Coins just the last decade or so.

Cards going forward its a horrible place to park real money. I mean seriously , couldn't some small factory in Guangzhou open up tomorrow and print up 2 billion sports card fakes in a week ?

The barrier to destroy that market is basically being able to afford a printer.

I sold my entire Vintage Football collection several years ago, not for a lack of love for the cards but it was just not a good place for me to put the kind of money I was putting into it. Not big money only around 25k really but still I felt that down the road I wouldn’t get it back if I got out. I think Galaxy is correct the sports card forum represents what I think is a far cry from what the hobby was like say 5-7 years ago.

Wow...to go from "hopping" to lucky to have a single post in a day, is certainly disheartening.

I'm a net54 member but I haven't posted there in a long time. I like the cigarette cards, etc, but it's not my main collecting interest. And I know they've added post WW2 cards to their mix quite a while back, I just sort of got in the habit of not posting there.

I think it was Blowout, somebody posted a link to there a few months ago, and I just quickly checked it out. It looked interesting but I didn't sign up because basically I'm already maxed out on my internet chatting time as it is.

I also enjoy some political forums out there. To illustrate how Facebook and Twitter are affecting internet forums, one of the largest political forums which I think had been around over 15 years, closed around six months ago due to a dwindling membership base. I actually almost bought it off the owner who wanted to dump it, the price was affordable. The big problem was I estimated the server fees to be about 2k per month, maybe higher, because of around 15 years of digital space on there, tens of thousands of threads and posts, videos, pics, etc. I just couldn't afford that. Mainly because it didn't seem like the affiliate commission clicks could possibly be even close to 2k in revenue per month. Obviously nobody else bought it either.

Speaking of Facebook affecting internet forums,ESPN's website just got rid of all of their comment sections after having them for 20+ years. You can't really blame them though when about half of the daily comments were dedicated to complaining about the writers or the website.

speaking of other streets in the neighborhood, i'll tell you what i find fascinating and, to be honest, rather sad. what do we have, 10 or so regular posters here? the motley crue we've assembled provides roughly the same amount of activity -- and unquestionably more excitement -- as the entire sports card forum. that place has become so painfully moribund that i honestly wonder if it's an outward sign of cardboard's future.

I think it's the competition out there for chat, rather than lack of interest in cardboard.

There of course is Facebook and Twitter which dominates the internet with chat.

I happen to prefer an internet forum format such as this one for a variety of reasons.

that could be it. i'm a member of another intimate card forum and in the beginning it was absolutely hopping. now, we're lucky to have a single post in a day.

i also browse around net54 and blowout from time to time, but not often enough to be able to detect variations in traffic

I think high grade cards are still a great long term investment and I don't think it's a tough call. We all saw that PSA 9 52 Mantle recently sell for around 3 million dollars. That doesn't sound to me like a hobby that is waning.

Once they switched from their older style of comment forums to Facebook the comment sections turned into a cesspool. If someone didn't agree with your sports opinion they'd then go click thru Facebook account looking for something to use against you. That's whats great about this forum where that isn't possible.

That's an excellent point about a big negative regarding Facebook.

Facebook has gotten a fair amount of bad publicity lately. All well deserved in my opinion.

I mean your talking about a PSA 9 Mickey Mantle, that card will always be what it is regardless if a buyer is into sports cards or not. You want to start talking PSA 8/9 cards of Star Players Pre 1980 I’m not 100% sure the market will always be strong

Point taken. And of course It depends on the "star" player.

I don't think anyone could possibly go wrong with high grade cards of Mantle, Mays, Clemente, etc.

Anybody loading up on high grade cards of say Hall of Famer, Bill Mazeroski, very likely wouldn't achieve the same investment potential. However I still think regardless of the difference, the value of high grade cards will increase over time, greater than say the stock market averages.

I dunno know. I think high grade vintage is safe and the top end of the market is thriving
and will continue to be highly sought after. The weird thing is I’m in Guangzhou as I type . Maybe I will visit a Mickey Mantle factory while I’m here

As someone who follows the vintage unopened market very closely, I can say with confidence that the market is as strong as ever and even more so for the tougher years/issues. A single PSA 7 1971 Topps baseball wax pack commands 3K at auction now, 1975 rack packs routine hammer at $450 or more and anything from 1977 and earlier is in high demand.

Mark is correct. The market for higher end HOFers and rookie cards is also very strong across the board.

I believe that PSA 9 Mantle that Evan Mathis sold hammered at around 4 million, IIRC.

Pretty sure it was 2.8 mil plus the buyer's vig, around 10 or 15%.
