1971 Topps Baseball Set

I'm very excited today. I Bought a 1971 Topps baseball set in Near Mint to Mint. The set has some centering issues especially with the high numbers but I understand that is common. It's missing the Clemente but everything else is there. Interestingly, the Mays is an OPC. Despite the condition a few of the cards are lesser grade but I'll replace them eventually. I bought the set to break it up but now I'm thinking I'll keep it. My family is on vacation at Hilton Head, South Carolina, when I get back to Ohio, I'll post some pictures. I wanted to let everyone know that if anyone is in the area, there is an antique shop called Cobb's Antiques in Savannah, that's where i bought the set. He is going out of business and is taking offers on the remaining stock. He has many sets from the 50's and 60's. If you're close it's worth a look. I got a great deal.

Hearing a price would greatly help to define "great deal". Your idea of a great deal and mine might be very different.

    Hiya David

    Congratulations on your pickup.

One thing - did you look close at the cards to make sure none were recolored? That's a big problem from what I understand with that set.

Congrats on the find. I live about 4.5 hours from Savannah. Did you look at any of the older sets? Do you know how long it will be before they close down? thanks!

Checked them for color and measured several cards, they are really nice, most look like they came straight from packs, again some centering issues on the highs but I can live with it.. I looked at some other sets, all appear about the same, the 1963 set was missing the Rose, I've just always wanted a 1971 set. Owner told me he bought the entire deal years ago from the wife of a dealer who died. He will be open for a couple of more months.

There are hobby recognized variations to cards 42, 123, 265, 306, 369 and 619. They do not involve large premiums but you might check to see which versions you have.

As for price, if you found it a bargain from your standpoint it should not matter what someone else might think.

    "Cobb's Antiques in Savannah"

Sure sounds to me like a baseball related antique store. ;)

Any Ty Cobb, the Georgia Peach, memorabilia in there? :)

Mostly antiques, some coins, toys and lots of baseball cards.

Sounds like you made a nice find. If you have always wanted one, I say keep the set - don't break it up.

Glad you got a good deal (unfortunately I'm not close enough to check out that shop.) If you've long wanted a '71 set, I'd keep it and try and upgrade for grade or centering or both, where you can. If you want to share pics from your set sometime, would be cool to see them.

I picked up the set about 3-4 years ago. It's in much better shape than the cards I had and I got tired of trying to find the high-numbered cards so I bit the bullet. I also checked the high $ cards for re-coloring and didn't see any. The 1970 and 1971 Topps don't get much love but I like them.
