71 Munson - PSA 8 - smudge question

I’ve owned / sold / regretted such sale / of a 71 Thurm in an 8. Searching for a replacement that won’t be sold and this beauty is up for sale.

The upper corner smudge is on the card, likely all that’s keeping this card from an even higher grade.

Would the smudge bother you??? Thanks for opinions - Steve

For me, yes. But that centering is awesome.

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere on this forum, but who is the guy sliding into home?

That’s Chuck Dobson. Must be fun for him to be included on such an iconic card!

The smudge would be bothersome, but not so much I couldn't enjoy the card.

Is this a $2200.00 card in an 8? Did you end up buying it?

The $2k+ is bit high - centering is pretty special on this one. Probstein sold one for 1,550 but so-so centering. I’m still waffling.

I have a really nice 8 if you're interested. I sent you a link to pics and a price.

Wouldn't bother me, but that's a tough / loaded question. Would it bother you is more pertinent, if you're considering buying the card. While I offer my opinion, it really means nil here. As collectors we're all different, what bothers one, another wouldn't notice.

I could live with the smudge. Everything else is looks great on that card.

If you like it, however want a better price send the seller a question. Something along the line, really nice card, how firm are you on the price? He can only say no, but only if you ask. Sometimes it works, sometimes I get nothing, sometimes it rains

Are you guys talking about the white marks in the upper right corner area?

@hyperchipper09 is right on. If it bothers you is the question. Almost by definition, any card that isnt a PSA10 has something wrong with it. (and there are plenty of threads on the board about things wrong with those that are 10s!). There was something imperfect with the 71 Thurman that you miss (because it was an 8), did it bother you? Would buying this one fill that hole for you or would the smudge just remind you that you once had a better 8??

By the way, if you know the cert number you could do a little "card stalking" on the registry, ebay, etc and see if you could find the current owner of the card you miss. Maybe he is open to offers.

With the 1971 Munson, the price spread between PSA 7 and 8 is so huge. Combine that with how tough PSA is on ‘71s, and I just can’t justify the expense of an 8 (though this one is very nice) compared to a nice 7.

For 80-85% less money, I’m happy with my 7. But if you’re willing to break the bank it is certainly a nice card even with the white mark.

Also, the ‘71 Munson is a great example of how PSA focuses on just a few of the many attributes that impact eye appeal. They are consumed with centering and corner wear, and yet aren’t a nice deep black background, no tilt/diamond cut, etc. just as important? To me these are huge factors, others may disagree. I guess if your priorities don’t match exactly with PSA’s you can try to exploit that to get bargains. So many early flip PSA 8s of this card just don’t seem that nice to me.
