If you do a eBay search for "Tilt Adaptor" along with your camera "Brand Name" a multitude of tilt shift ring adaptors which fit between the camera body and lens will pop up.

Is this to tilt the lens to capture toning?(what i struggle to do)
If so, wouldn't the coin image be out of round?

Yes sometimes a slight tilt helps make some coins pop. Most of the tilt shift adaptors available a few years ago had too great a degree shift for macro usage being more fit for architectural photography. There are newer models available now. My camera head on my copy stand tilts and I have used a fine tooth comb for years which offer the slight incline shift needed for some proof like coins.

Or you can use a piece of felt tucked under one edge of the coin. Despite my new toy, this is what I did today.

    and the reverse becomes this:

It's easier to tilt the coin.

The difference between a tilt device for the camera versus what im trying to do here is that tilting the lens is changing the tilt of the light coming off the coin into the lens. Tilting the object is changing the tilt that your lighting source hits the object. That is the challenge in getting toned coins right. The camera captures whatever photons are being sent to it. The idea is to send the right photons to it.

Learning to do focus stacking/getting photoshop are on my to do list. In the mean time I jack the aperture setting to get the best I can with the light I've got.

That ancient was shot sitting on an LED light box with 4x ott lights with diffusers. I used the afore mentioned piece of white felt to lift one edge for the color shot. Unfortunately it's harder to wipe away the felt background than the plain white from the lightbox when making the final photo.
