Last year's edition of the 20th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins says "Issue $53, Market Value $75". The book suggests that the set has slightly over two ounces of pure silver (the silver coins are sterling). I would bet that that's where most of the present value is.

Also, if you plug the issue price into a CPI inflation adjuster, the $53 projects into $272. in today's money. That was a pricey pricey set when new. 5,578 sets issued per SCWC, but apparently the two biggest silver coins had additional individual silver proofs issued besides those found in the sets. There seem to be copper-nickel examples of all the silver coins too. Super confusing once stuff gets outside of the Mint-issued plastic.

Just by eyeballing them, I would guess four silver coins and three copper nickel.

Did they make all silver sets?

If so this set looks like all silver.

I dug out the SCWC 20th century book again, and yes all seven coins in an intact set are sterling. Seven coins total 2.2 Troy ounce pure.

That said, the three small coins in your set have a considerably different color/appearance than the four large coins.

In hand they are definitely all silver. Lovely cameos .

    Thanks for your research ......

Do you know how many sets were made all silver?

    SCWC says 5,578 sets.

There were also additional One Tala pieces coined in silver proof proof. Either 6,000 more or 11,000 more. SCWC isn't entirely clear.

The small coin in the set:

Weird how the photo rips came out here.

If you don't have a SCWC, you can sometimes figure this stuff out from Google images.

Samoa is a way big over-issuer of meaningless NCLT.

I agree with your "melt" comment. I did all along. The OP probably wants to get "set" money when all that seems to be left from the original set is some of the plastic (not in good shape). No box, no paperwork.

There are 7.595 billion people on earth, and I sincerely doubt that even two dozen people collect this Samoan stuff.

I personally don't understand how a fellow (like the OP) can claim to own scarce to rare Mexican gold coins and NOT own a recent copy of the 20th century SCWC. Odd.

From time-to-time, the five volume Catalog of SCWC gets offered by the publisher for $160 postpaid.

I find it incomprehensible that a serious numismatist doesn't own a set.

I can understand not having each volume brand new, but the 19th and 20th century books should not be too old.

You need to get on numismaster's e-mail offer list and then patiently wait.

Right now they just republished the 20th and 21st Century books (2019 editions) and they are asking premium prices. I would guess (from prior experience) that prices will come down by this Fall.

They also offer e-book format, but the price seems to be the same.

You can buy them from many sources, but the real super deals on the sets come by buying direct from F+W (parent company of KP). I get all the messages from Numismaster, and once in a while they get a decent order.

Also, if you have the 19th century SCWC and the 20th century SCWC, those two books are the ones that you must have (the ones you will consult the most frequently) - the other three books are just icing on the cake.

I'm on the bubble on this offer. Three of the five books are new editions, one edition newer than what I presently have.

They usually have a show special at ANA. (In Philly this year, in case you didn’t know.)

  • BillDugan1959BillDugan1959 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm a forty year ANA member, but if the convention isn't in Chicago or Chicagoland, it is very difficult to go. Long ago, I was able to get to ANA conventions in STL, Milwaukee and Cincinnati.

I would think that trip would be very enjoyable. If you can also get to Independence Hall and The U.S. Mint (located quite close to each other), so much the better!

  • bronco2078bronco2078 Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭✭

why do you need a newer edition? They suck at actually updating prices on world coins. Usually the newer editions are just copied wholesale from the old , with a new cover

The cost of obtaining the books/ new editions of the SCWC is really minimal compared to the possible consequences of missing big changes. But the big changes are usually slow, except in the 21st Century SCWC book.

Also, the 17th Century SCWC, the 18th Century SCWC, and the 19th Century SCWC ARE REISSUED in a two year cycle, while the 20th Century and 21st Century are reissued annually. This makes choosing exactly when to buy a more complicated question. I try to wait until at least three or four out of the five books is one edition newer than what I already have.

If you can't afford the books, which are relatively cheap in the sets/bundles, well, there is nothing to say or to explain, except that coin collecting is possibly something you should not do. A good numismatic library is essential to a smart collector.

I prefer the pdf format for SCWCs. Portable and searchable.

The pardon is for tyrants. They like to declare pardons on holidays, such as the birthday of the dictator, or Christ, or the Revolution. Dictators should be encouraged to keep it up. And we should be encouraged to remember that the promiscuous dispensation of clemency is not a sign of political liberality. It is instead one of those valuable, identifying marks of tyranny.
