1990 Donruss Errors

So I'm going to throw this out there in the hopes that someone else can add to it. After all, most of this was someone else's work at one point that I added to here and there. I believe this is as up-to-date as you can get for a list of errors (I literally added 3 to the list about an hour ago). I'm not including splatter patterns or "no dot" just for brevity's sake.

Oddly enough, not all of these are available in the first-run error boxes. Donruss actually took perfectly fine cards in the initial batch and screwed them up in subsequent printings and then had to correct them down the road. So it's a bit of a guessing game as far as when they entered the unopened product food chain. I've pulled all of these except for maybe 3 or 4 in first or second run wax though.

If anyone has anything to add to this PLEASE feel free to speak up. Thanks!

Aren’t there also the all star cards that have variations with a line through the star? Also, I think there’s a Nolan Ryan variation, but can’t recall what it was off the top of my head.

The #660 Harold Baines card has 4 variations:
-black line through the yellow star on front, “Recent Major League Performance” on back
-black line through the yellow star on front, “All Star Game Performance” on back
-no black line through the yellow star, “Recent Major League Performance” on back
-no black line through the yellow star, “All Star Game Performance” on back

There are 2 Nolan Ryan special issue error cards:
-One card has #659 "5,000 K's" on the front, but has his #665 "King of Kings" bio printed on the back.
-The second card has #665 Dick Perez "King of Kings" painting on the front, but has his #659 career stats printed on the back.

The Nolan Ryan wrong backs are the best errors in the set IMHO. 90 Donruss has a special place in my heart. Busted a few boxes over the past several years. My cousin pulled the Nolan errors _in the same pack _on two separate occasions. They may not be worth a ton, but we were slapping high fives like crazy.

Great list - I will have it bookmarked as a reference next time we do a break.

Yeah, sorry. I just assumed everyone knew about the All-Star and Ryan errors.

I've discovered two more variations since I posted the initial list, including one for Griffey Jr.

So I don't have much to add except I bought an unopened collection a few years back that had 3 90 D boxes and the dealer had put "Error" stickers on the boxes. I think the only way to know for sure is to open them but I'm not sure if any of the errors are worth it. No big loss in opening the boxes either way. Have 90 UD boxes he had the same sticker on and 89 F that was labeled the same way and did have the BR FF in those as I opened a box. This thread has me interested in opening them to see but then what to do with those horrible looking cards.

I've ripped a decent amount of the first two print runs. I'd say around two cases of each, give or take. It's probably too early to say with absolute certainty because the sample size is just me but at this point I'm noticing no more than 4 or so of the errors are actually hard to find. Keep in mind, I haven't ripped any "control" wax (a later print run when everything should be corrected). So it may be completely safe to assume that none of the errors are actually difficult at all to find.

Where it gets dicey is in finding them in gem mint condition or in finding the unopened wax. Those two things are proving to be increasingly difficult. I can rip 3-4 boxes and not find a card I would submit for a 10. Of all the wax I've ripped, I own four PSA 10s that I submitted. I have more at PSA now but not more than 10-15 cards.

Dark red border + piss poor QC + brief & hurried initial run + smallest puzzle piece + tight wrap = perfect storm

So keep that in mind if you're going to rip the boxes. It's not enough for you to pull the errors, you have to pull PSA 10 errors. Of course, try convincing someone that doesn't know you that the boxes you're trying to sell them are error boxes. It's a Catch-22.

Went through 5,000 more first-print run cards this morning and found a few new variations. At this point, I'd consider the above list extremely fluid as I haven't gotten serious about examining the card backs. I'm going to wait to update the list until I feel like I've at least somewhat exhausted my resources.

I've isolated another print run in between what I previously referred to as the first and second print runs. I have info for three print runs now with the new addition being the second print run in this updated list. The sample size for that print run is one case.

There's like an 86% chance I'm talking to myself here but if anyone else is reading this and has easy access to sorted 1990 Donruss I could use some input.

    • Was #287 Joe Orsulak ever corrected? Does anyone have a copy of this card that doesn't have the black mark on the front?

    • Anyone have #562 Rick Luecken red dot on cap? I'd like one more confirmation on this card before I sign off 100% on it.

There are actually many more in addition to these but I want more concrete verification. At the rate I'm ripping cases it hopefully won't take long, although a few of these are actually proving to be legit rare, which I found surprising.

An explanation for some of the blanks.

I have no idea what the Bo Jackson DK error is. That's there from the original JWG list that was an excellent starting point and made me realize how many more errors there were in this set than just what I knew of. But I've yet to come across a copy of this card different from any other. The error obviously appears in a later print run. If anyone has a copy, I'd love to see it just for reference.

I basically spent the first 95% of my time pulling out Terry Steinbach base and searching for a blue or white line. It was driving me crazy. Then I realized it was the Terry Steinbach AS card and I've been so mad that I haven't gone back and checked those cards. I wouldn't remember which print run I pulled them from anyway, so, yeah.

I honestly can't tell the difference between Jeff Innis mostly red and mostly white. For all I know, I may only have one version. At this point though I mostly don't care.

Weirdest thing about the bojillion boxes I've opened? I've pulled 4 Bart Giamatti commissioner cards. Seriously.

All-Star Cards ----- Harold Baines, Julio Franco, Wade Boggs, Bo Jackson, and Kirby Puckett are all
missing the "TM" trademark symbol next to the American League emblem on
the front of their cards. No examples with the "TM" present are known.

Diamond Kings ----- Some DKs have been reportedly found with No Period after INC on back.
These should be considered difficult, if not rare, and not all DKs are known to
exist with No Period INC. A stark contrast to the availability of Period/No Period
        INC base cards.

I may have to pull out the 90D binder and see what I have in there!

For the Larkin at least, the variation followed the INC/INC.; I couldn't find an individual variation that had both possible. I already had these new variations separated before I knew about the 'peppers' on the front.

Makes sense. Since the variations are scarce, they probably weren't run with both versions.

Unfortunately, I gave zero fricks about the INC/INC. going into this Kubrickian project so I don't have that info available for all the E&Vs.

Was Cal Ripken part of the error dance?

He's got the All-Star Performance/Recent ML Performance variation on the back of his All-Star cards like all the other All-Star cards but I've yet to find any other variations for him. Unless he's in the MVP subset, in which case he would have the INC/INC. pair of those.

Did I find another Ryan error? See the black lines partially covering letters in NOLAN RYAN at top. Thoughts?

I have 7 to 8 thousand of 90 D in sort boxes. Opened 90/91. Checked in 99 and this year for HOF players. When I have the time and/or interest will check for said newly found errors. I do have 2 cases of blister packs and 9 or so wax boxes. I too only have 3 or 4 Giamati's.

Just misaligned printing. I've got that on a lot of cards. QC was an abomination in '90 Donruss. They didn't throw out anything. Everything got put into packs.

Has anyone seen the Ken Griffey Jr. 365 with a Green "Scar" underneath his right eye? Most of the cards sold on ebay do not have this and I have seen the "Green Scar" card listed (but not sold) for hundreds of dollars. I have one with this scar so I am definitely curious.

It's a seemingly insignificant print defect that also doesn't seem that rare. But the 1990 Donruss Griffey has at least three seemingly insignificant print defects that don't appear to be too rare. Could they combine forces to Voltron into an actually rare print defect? That doesn't seem like a project I'm much interested in. But anyone who did undertake such a project would certainly be in my good graces.

Yes, “many” thousands of us do.

Nothing rare about the INC/INC. variations.

Every time this thread pops up I'm reminded of how much more work I have left to do on this. I'm basically treating the remaining wax cases in my basement like Wilson from 'Cast Away.'

    DO YOU UNDERSTAND!?!?"

ahh yes the height of the error card period of the junk wax era. I'd do recall in my youth the initial joy of pulling the 1990 Score Sandberg 3B error card from a pack after having seen it in publications then minutes later thinking so what :)

Unless otherwise specified my posts represent only my opinion, not fact.
