1987 Fleer Brown Backs?

I was doing my duty and ridding this cruel world of another factory sealed '87 Fleer Glossy set this morning when I happened upon an interesting Jose Canseco. Any ideas? The regular Fleer issue used the same card stock, I believe, as the Glossy version, as they're both white on the back. Did Fleer produce an issue that year that used a brown stock and maybe they fed some of those sheets through the printer at some point?

Does anyone else have any of these or has anyone seen them before?

I love everything 1987 so this is a nice addition to my collection no matter what it turns out to be. The fact that it's Canseco is just gravy icing.

What made 1987 so lovable Arthur ? The Simpsons ?

I think that maybe the Fleer Star Stickers might have had a darker backing. I've tried to think if any of the smaller boxes sets of superstars or award winners or whatever they were had anything other than white, and cannot recall. I'd have to go digging for those sets, and I'm not sure where to start.

I don't have much experience with the glossy, but I've certainly handled some of the regular 87 Fleer cards on the white stock that could sometimes be a little dingy, more yellowish than brown, but I don't recall ever seeing something as dark as the Canseco appears to be.

I've noticed some back shading variance on non-glossy 87F, from bright white to a shade or two lighter than that Canseco. I have far fewer 87F Glossy to compare, but haven't seen any close to that dark.

Checked my set, no brownies. Also I have no variations for that set. Are there some ?

Thanks, Doug. I'll look into the Stickers. For some reason I thought they had glossy finish back, not a card stock back.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've seen various shades for the backs and for the fronts. This is even more pronounced in-hand though, it's clearly a different stock. I'm hoping more surface now. Nobody ever really pays attention to the backs unless they're given a reason too.

Al, 1987 was the first year I went all-in on collecting. I stuffed stacks of '87 Topps into each of the pockets on my nylon Red Sox jacket before school each day for trading. All allowance went toward packs. My life revolved around baseball cards.

I dug out an 87 Fleer Star Sticker of Wally World. It appears to be similar stock as the regular cards, maybe slightly duller white, so that's a dead end.

I know your Canseco is not a box bottom, but I have an 88 Schmidt that was cut from a box, and that is more what I would call "brown" (gray?) stock than the shade of your Canseco. It's always interesting, though, to come across possible variations. Good luck, and perhaps more that are similar to your Canseco will surface.

Doug, thanks for digging those out. I appreciate the assist. I'm going to keep ripping sets so I'll be keeping a look out for more now. I've got a handful of sets I need to go back and check too. I'm sure this will turn out to be nothing but the investigative research is probably what I love most about the hobby.

In the meantime, I've got a cool oddball Canseco for my collection. I love it.

It's common for white paper to brown over time since it's made from wood products if it's not treated with chemicals. It will darken more if exposed to sunlight.
