Predict the grade - pre submission 1980 Bird/J/Magic

What do the experts think? I’d be satisfied with a 7. But think it could be 6-8. Would love to hear your predictions.

That might be seen as paper loss, so I would think below a 5??

If they don't ding it for paper loss it could be an 8. I like that it doesn't have the dreaded black line near Magic's name.

What's going on in the perforation just below Larry's sight line?

    1. I think that notch, or whatever you want to call it, under the magnifying glass drags the grade down.

Thanks all. Really hoping they don’t ding me for the chip/dent.

Yeah, familiar with the skips. Talking about the vertical lines, especially the one that dissects the first perf above the skip. I'm assuming by your lack of concern that those are on the plastic holder.

I think the fisheye on the back gets cancelled out by your perfect back registration. Back registration on these is kind of a b!tch and the blue in the names is always slightly off and it sticks out like a sore thumb. But PSA doesn't seem to mind; I have a PSA 10 of the Bird rookie and the back reg is slightly off. It really all boils down to how they're going to view that thing on the edge. I don't even know how to view it. I think I'd need to see it in-hand.

    I don't think you're looking at an 8 though.

    Result is in:

    PSA 5.

They definitely dinged it for the ding.

But I still love the card.

I had a 1981 Donruss golf card that had two chip / dents on it, although my dents were probably half the size of these. Card came back PSA 10, so you never know.

Edited to add that my chip / dent was from the manufacturing process since I've seen the same on other 1981 Donruss cards, but I was still shocked with the grade.

That's the type of card you crack out and get it signed by all 3. The total cost on the auto's should run about $350-$400

I agree but I would try to get it graded again before doing that. I had a Dr. J rookie that took 3 or 4 submission over a 5 year period that started off as a 5 and is now a 7.

It might have been a little passive aggressive, but scanned images are much easier to judge when trying to estimate a grade.

Generally even a good scanned image can be hard to "guess the grade" on.

I agree, Joe. Ideally I would have done that. And if/when I sell I’ll definitely do that. Was originally supposed to be a quick guess the grade thread, with pictures being more convenient at the time. Regardless of the delivery, the advice has merit, especially when I sell.

Sorry about that. DIdn't mean it to come across as a smartarse. I just meant, in order to maximize the premium you should be able to get for that card (it's super nice and should get better than 5 money) you'll need a nice scanner to sell the buyer on dropping that coin.

I am jamming my foot in my mouth a lot lately. Brain less work for me now. Concussions bad.
