OT - A Plane Just Landed Outside Our Office...

ianrussellianrussell Posts: 2,496 ✭✭✭✭✭
The view from our office!

Doesn't look like anyone is hurt and no cars hit. Very lucky. Red Hill Avenue is a very busy road.

For anyone that visits PCGS, this is on Red Hill Avenue (the main road before you get to PCGS's street). It's a very very busy road (7 lanes).

Orange County Airport is only two miles away. Maybe they were running out of gas or got lost.

Might have to taxi a ways to a runway?

How close are you to the airport.

Drove through that intersection this morning on the way to PCGS.

At least it looks like a clean, well managed landing with landing gear and fuselage intact.

Landing on a road is one of those things I think about all the time and hope to never do. The closest I've come is a plane in my logbook landing on a highway a few years after I flew it.

Hardest part of a street landing is avoiding wires!

This one occurred near Boeing field in Seattle. Was rescued by a ladder truck from the SFD.

One small airplane landed on Red Hill Avenue, Irvine this evening.

I stopped a week ago to get a ladder out of the road way. 20 cars slowed and went around it and then the next 4 drove right over it, at that point I turned around got back in the truck and drove off.

Glad no one got hurt. 30 years ago a friend of mine bought a small plane and I went on a ride with him. After he aborted 3 attempts to land I asked him what the problem was. He said he had never flown it without an instructor. lol It did not bother me then but then again 30 years ago I did a lot of stuff I would never dream of doing today.

To those that fly is there any penalties or punishment for landing on the roadway and if so by what agency?

The FAA regulates air traffic. There is no regulation I know of about that prohibits landing on a road, other than flying too low

If the pilot has an emergency, the plane is coming down and there isn't much choice.
If there isn't an emergency the FAA will pull the pilots license for being an idiot. To me, running out of fuel qualifies as being an idiot.

Depending on why they landed, the pilot could be subject to civil and other criminal actions (like if they landed on and killed a stationwagon full of nuns)

I would say it must have been some sort of emergency.... no pilot would choose to land on a busy street otherwise... I am familiar with that area... lots of traffic. Cheers, RickO
