1851 Braided Hair large cent (w/grading poll) *PCGS grade revealed

Time for another "GTG" (Guess the Grade) poll, just for fun.

Here's my latest US coin purchase.

As you can see, it is in TPG plastic, so I will vote the "Neutral/Results Only" option in the poll, and will reveal the grade after the poll has reached 25-30 votes or so.

I voted Genuine. Color looks mustard yellow, granted that could be messed up white balance for lighting but those coins do not come in mustard yellow as far as I know....although Large Cents are not my series. It could be genuine for cleaning or questionable color etc. I just don't know but that is my guess.

I hope I'm wrong. Besides the color it looks nice.

Coin is original all day long... so if it made a details or gen holder it needs a reconsideration badly.
It's one of those pieces that either got a 58 or a 62 BN imo. I voted the former. Nice piece. Congrats

Color is nice, original, no problem there. Looks like it probably has AU-58 type wear. Does have a mark on the nape of the neck that isn't great to have -- especially as slider AU is pretty easy to find in 1851's, for whatever reason.

    I'd say AU58. Nice coin!

15 votes, now. As of this posting, we're tied between AU58 and MS63 BN, with four votes each.

I do not yet have this coin in hand, though it is now in transit. Don't see the "mustard yellow" keyman64 did, but that could be something to do with the photo, his monitor, or both. I will probably resubmit this to PCGS for reholdering and a TrueView, simply because I like TrueViews with my coins these days. (Yes, it is in a PCGS holder, though I'll wait until another 20+ poll votes have been tallied to reveal the grade... or lack thereof.)

PS- what's the Newcomb variety, copperpeople?

PPS- looks like the AU58 camp just slid ahead.

I've looked at it on my iPhone and computer monitor, it looks the same. It sounds like I am wrong and that's great, not only for the OP but also for my education. Copper has never been my thing. Although, in the last 10 days I have looked at over 1,000 copper auction photos in the way of Large Cents and Half Cents and have not come across this type of color from what I can recall, that is why I guessed what I did. I certainly defer to those way more experienced than myself. image

I think that the coin is a somewhat lightly struck Mint State coin, which is typical for the era. I voted MS-63, Brown. There are nicks on the chin and and neck which preclude the higher grades.

28 votes, with AU58 and MS63 BN vying for the majority. (AU58 leads by one vote at this point.)

I will now post the coin (slab picture and all) in a new thread, since I'll need that for the permalink from my Box of 20.

    Stand by...

And the grade is revealed here!

    Thanks for playing! image

Nice coin, MS-63 brown would've been my other choice. Large cents like this, you'd have to rotate it in good light to determine AU or MS, so to grade from a photo wasn't really fair (more so than usual.) image

AU53 was my knee jerk reaction and vote.
Now that I have time to take a closer look, I see no wear. Just lightly struck is all.
    Very pleasing.

    Congrats LM.
