Do you have a pic of the reverse too?

NT. Looks like it came out of one those velvet boxes of JFKs I see for sale on EBay.

Im going to bet the reverse is untoned as are most of the JFKs from those sets.

I kind of like to green mixed in the lower side of the hair.

But that is the only thing I can think of that is nice about it.

peg legged "I" is a pick up diagnostic for the accented hair variety
this image is hard to read but that "I" looks peg legged

if such is the case...it's the 1st toned accented hair i'm seeing

Whelp, since you did ask, I'd say it needs a good 45 min Dip, IMHO image

maybe the op will chime back in and
let us know if this is a proof and
if it is an accented hair variety

a small part of me thinks it may just be one

Now that you mention it, when is the last time you have seen a toned AH?

I got it in a group of coins from my fathers estate. I don't know if its a proof or not and if it is or isn't a accented half. Are there any ways of telling if its an accented half from the reverse? Would it be helpful to show more pics from different angles?

    Thanks

step one, give it a dip to get that muck off it image
  • lasvegasteddylasvegasteddy Posts: 10,432 ✭✭✭
    myself
    i'd leave it as is

<<< DO NOT DIP THIS CROWD HERE

it is an uncommon hue found in toning...yellow/green/brown then a mottled center
surely not for most or the majority
but for avid toning enthusiast...it is....an uncommon hue there

plus dipping some toned examples destroys a coin if that toning has progressed for too long and etched the surface

I looked at it again and it does not appear to have the peg leg I. The reverse is brilliant but alas I don't think its a Accented Hair
The picture supplied by one of the posters reflects the true color of the coin. I will not dip the coin
    Thanks for all your help

    Frank D.
  • Don't dip it and better images with good lighting and good focus will be very helpful.

there are 2 reverses for 1964 proofs,,,,but just about no one cares about the reverse or reverse die marriages of 1964 proof kennedy's

it's all about the obverse if it's accented hair or not

maybe someday that will change but it hasn't in like 9 years i've known about it

Doesn't look proof to me, looks like plausible endroll toning, esp if the reverse is white and the reeds on the edge are toned inside. Lets see pics of the other two sides

KISHU1 is a long time darkside collector and as such I would imagine this is unusual for his collection.

almost looks like aged shellac but surely it's some type of protectant....versus toning
maybe someone thought to protect the roll by using linseed oil or shellac looking stuff on the end coins ???

something is just off about that color
to me anyway...thinking out loud here
