I would be interested in the 1850, a high grade 1889-S, and any with interesting rusty coloration, like the CC half eagle posted here earlier.

You know, in previous threads some have been arguing this is a hoard rather than a collection, in large part because these things were buried in cans in the ground rather than stored in velvet lined cabinets in a walk-in safe. But looking at these date runs... you're going to tell me this is a random accumulation?

Ah, to the OP's question, I really have no idea which one I would shoot for.

While not one of the coins listed by the OP, I would be interested in the 1849-D half eagle in VF30.

Think of the stories this coin has to tell ...

I would need to see how they grade but a couple of gems and a CC $20 or two. These coins will sell like wildfire, I sure would like to pick up a dozen or so and plan to be a serious bidder. I would love to have about 50 or 60 of them in my case at a show. I already have some gold coins from Samaszkos hoard.

What an exciting discovery, it makes me want to sell all my non gold coins and have 100% gold coins.

I would like to own any one of them.. unfortunately for me, not in my budget.

    Price speculation anyone? $2500 - $10000 ++?

Anybody got a calculator handy? I add that up in my head to 1,149 pieces. I guess the other 224 $20's did not grade.

Hopefully I didn't miss anything and yes the number at the end is the number of that date/MM that graded.

Here's what I found on the $10's, the number at the end is the total graded for Saddle Ridge:

    1847-O 1
    1856-S 1
    1872-S 1
    1873-S 1
    1874-S 1
    1875-CC 1
    1881-S 1
    1882-S 2
    1886-S 12
    1887-S 7
    1888-S 14
    1892-S 1
    1893-S 1

I'd take whatever the cheapest and most circulated example was that they have.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Agreed. I'd have to find a hoard of greenbacks in my fuzzy couch to be able to afford one of these pups.
Let's try not to get upset.

I've been intrigued with the lack of availability of choice unc 1877-s to 1890-s Type 3 $20 Libs since 1979 when I first studied them for surviving pops. And at that time there was literally nothing in the market except
sliders and AU's. The plentiful mintages of approx 1 MILL coins per year suggested they were out there but the actual coins said otherwise. Until this hoard, they really haven't been available. I have my favorites in this
group but they are all pretty much worthwhile. Just give me anything from 63 to 64 with great eye appeal, luster, and slightly less marks that normal. I can't afford the 65's as those will be $20K to $35K. At least there
aren't as many of these as there are of the 1857-s. I recall when NERCG first ran across a MS64ish 1883-s or 1884-s back in the early to mid-1980's and proclaimed it a numismatic land mark. Now we have dozens of
choice uncs for each of these S mints.

    an interesting set of coins.

is this an eyeball into what was available at the banks at the time these coins were buried.

While there are a lot of attractive coins there, I will not buy one - simply because of what will likely be the excessive premium. I do not find provenance's or special labels interesting. Cheers, RickO

    A quote from Numismatic news:

"over 200 were unprofessionally cleaned by the owner" Kagin Lamented. These were slabbed by pcgs but given no grades."

    This is really sad...

Im curious also how they plan to sell 1200 coins to a public that will probably be in the tens of thousands (if not more)...
Will the site crash with hundreds of people clicking to buy the same coin at the same second?

It will be timed with the opening of the next Hunger Games sequel: "Quest For Gold." You will be able to order from Amazon right from your movie theater seat.

Thanks for posting the date/mintmark distribution.
This definitely refutes my prior theories on "leftovers" and a mint collection of their output (which would have been 1-2 of each year).

It does look more like an individual's home-stored savings.

I would like to know this story a little more. As someone who relic hunts, it's real easy to want to shine things up a bit and destroy all value.

Probably none, unless an attractive deal could be made in the secondary market after all the hoopla settles down. Although this has been an incredible find, and has brought ALOT of positive attention to numismatics, all of the coins involved (with exception of one or two) are not quite old enough for me to pay a premium for.

    Elmer -

I see there were 3 1861-S Double Eagles in the Saddle Ridge Hoard. Do you know if any of those three were 1861-S Paquet coins? DaveWcoins had responded on another thread that there were no Paquets in the hoard, but Julien in a currently published article has suggested there may be one.

I looked in the pop report which showed 3 1861-S's, one in XF-40, one in 45 and one in 50, but no Paquets.

I've seen several of the Saddle Ridge coins get reholdered in NGC holders with higher grades. I'm not sure how the resale of these is going. I know I'm enjoying my 89-S in MS-63! image

Thanks for the informative response. I suspect it may be the question posed by me regarding the Paquet in the first thread that was posted here on this forum regarding the Saddle Ridge Hoard that left the impression there was a Paquet in the Saddle Ridge Hoard. Here is the recent quote that suggested there may have been a 1861-S Pqquet in the Saddle Ridge Hoard:

"The Paquet double eagle is one of the most sought-after pieces in the series [of Liberty Head Double Eagles] and the recently discovered Saddle Ridge Hoard is said to have contained one of these rare coins."

October, 2014, "COINage" article titled, "The Other Double Eagle" by R.W. Julian at page 44.
