My friend JMW just called me on a 1901-S Quarter on eBay -
PCGS 55 - serial number 11340285.
The coin looks "ok" in the images , it's got an old minor
obverse scratch on the neck that has aged - and at first
glance looks like a legit sale. However, we checked his
other offerings... an 1856 FE in PCGS 62 and an 1893-S
Morgan in PCGS 50. The seller is in The United Kingdom
... I have not heard of the city before ... the seller has a
Feed Back rating of "5".
Lots of red flags. So, I checked with PCGS cert. verification
and the cert is good... But !!! PCGS now has a link to when
this coin sold last - and sure enough, our friends at Heritage
handled the sale... Clicked on the link... And, guess what ?
It's not the same coin in the eBay sale ... Same cert number though.
Gotta love the technology of today - hope the seller in England gets
shut down.

But you would never know this without a real one to compare it to.
seller id?
that style of counterfeit holder is very common so if you see ANY that match it, run forest run!

<< <i>I'm not convinced that the 1901-S is a fake coin. It could very well be a real piece in a fake, overgraded holder. It would definitely not be the first time I've seen that. >>
while this is possible, if it makes you feel better, 100% of the holders of this specific type (counterfeit) house counterfeit coins that i've seen and i've seen hundreds with no exceptions. (yet)
