What the vote in this poll shows is that neary 1/5 of the people who responded shouldn't be voting on anything, ever. Unless you're totally clueless, you would never have to carry more than four. How heavy is that? Answer- not very. Another answer- if it's too heavy, you've got bigger problems than having to tote four of them.

I'm sure folks who get lots of singles as tips, like strippers and valets, will find a way to deal with it. Where there's a will, there's a way.

I for one, would love to get back into the Presidential Dollars but right now, its just too damned expensive!
Quite frankly, I do not know why the paper dollar has not been eliminated and I do not know why an Executive Order is not issued to immediately begin the phase out of the one dollar paper note. We have billions languishing in Federal Reserve Vaults which represent the ignorance of our legislation with regard to saving money.
PS. I note that the linked article makes the statement: "Americans love their greenbacks and have never warmed to dollar coins." which is total crap! Why does the news media continue to make this statement since the reality is that most American's don't care as long as it can be spent!
The "REAL" driving factor here is the hesitance of merchants, both big conglomerates and small operations, to actually order dollar coins instead of paper bills to give out as change.
Would folks prefer to receive dollar bills over dollar coins? Of course but then this deficit has nothing to do with what folks "prefer"! I mean, I'd "prefer" to not have to pay Federal Income Taxes but the government doesn't care about "that" particular preference! Why then should they care about which type of money I prefer to spend? Or receive?
The bottom line is that I and millions of other Americans would get used to $1 coins and for that matter $2 coins! Just like the folks in other countries.

The revenue generated by eliminating the currency is minimal on a national scale. I doubt if it exceeds a few dollars per year per citizen.
Public parking in Santa Cruz dispenses them as change.
The VAT of Santa Clara county dispenses them as change.
Bart occasionally dispenses them as change.
They're accepted on buses in San Francisco
The amusement park great America uses them as change.
Most long term parking in the suburbs accept the $1 coin as well.
All local and state colleges accept them as payment for parking in parking garages, lots.
And they're used in San Francisco suburbs at gas stations, and fast food ( several customers a day) they're more convenient than a dollar bill.
So if they keep up the momentum they will circulate. As long as they're dispersed to the public they will be used.
