1902 Barber Half - Blast white!

I bought this recently from a guy carrying it around in an old Bowers and Merena mylar auction flip.
It was simply graded "MS" and was from their "Spring Quartette" sale in 1992.
It had clearly rubbed around inside the old plastic flip and looked to have developed wear on the high points.
It also had developed a tiny bit of green PVC haze. I made him a pretty fair offer based on the potential damage & wear.
He was pretty happy and so I cut it out immediately, took it home and soaked it overnight in acetone.
You can still see some haze... it very well may be permanent.
Does this stand any chance of grading? Can you tell at all from the photos?

Is there any haze on Liberty's face?
A solid 63 perhaps?

all-in-all a nice quarter and is quite lustrous so long as the contaminates have bee neutralized

<< <i>Might go MS-64 if there is no environmental damage. >>
That's the big question right there. I will send it in to PCGS sometime soon. In the meantime, I'm really far out of my element on being able
to determine just what state this coin might be in. There is a little bit of what looks like friction on the neck just under the ear. It's not quite
as apparent in hand, but the photo shows it well.
<< <i>I'm not seeing any rub, perhaps some frost break on the eagle's cheek and neck feathers but I don't think that would preclude it from an MS grade.

Just a tiny amount in places, not all over the face. It's only visible when tilted just so...
Brian,
Looks MS 64 to me - it's hard to grade MS coins from images alone.
It certainly has booming luster - and I see no breaks in the luster.
Good luck.

Are you referring to the neckline area? It's such a small area that if it were rub I don't think it would matter, especially if it isn't as apparent in hand.
Hoard the keys.
<< <i>Look like some one tryed to take off something they did not like and ruff it up a bit.
Nope, like I said... it was in the sealed flip when I bought it and I haven't touched it other than to soak it overnight.
I'm afraid to even breathe on the damn thing. I think maybe I'll send it off tomorrow. You guys are encouraging.
You should have heard all the negative feedback I received after buying it this weekend at the show.
Just kidding....looks pretty good to me. If there is some unsightly haze, just give it a quick dip (?).
Thanks for posting.

Half-dollar.

That being said, I've seen coins with more problems than this one get into TPG holders. The cheek looks fairly clean, and neck isn't too bad. It wouldn't surprise me to see this coin in an MS 63 or MS 64 holder, depending on what sort of day the graders are having when they see the coin.

I think it will grade.

Thanks, I think that's exactly what I'll do. No way I'm messing with dipping it.
I think MS63/63+/or 64 is not out of the question.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
I'm curious, what were people at the show complaining about? There are a few potential issues that are much easier to see in-hand than in a photo.

I know the question is directed at the OP, but I'm guessing the real complaint was that they didn't get a shot to buy it, or that it came from someone else's inventory.
<< <i>I would have been very happy to buy this for AU58 money. If it grades (and I think it might), you'll have done very nicely. I always wonder why the guy would sell it to me instead of sending it in himself though.

Well, the day I purchased it a few other dealers had passed on it. Like I said, it had a visible green haze both front & back.
After I bought it and showed it to a couple friends they were convinced the PVC would not remove. I didn't know for sure if it would or would not.
I began to believe they were correct and I just had a $300 "lesson".
