1931 S

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and new to coin collecting. My father passed away a few weeks ago and left a bit of silver and a few coins to me. The one could find was the most rare/valuable was the 1931-S wheat penny. I've seen numbers anywhere from $40-$1000 and am just looking to get a ballpark figure. It's in pretty good shape but then again. I'm the wrong person when it comes to coin grading.

I would also like to know if this this coin turns about to be worth ~$100 would it be worth having it sent to a coin grader?

Any help or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

    Welcome aboard.

If you tip the coin in front of a light you can see the high points of the design. If the coins
is mostly red (shiny) then it's important that these high points be as shiny as the rest of the
coin. This would mean it's Uncirculated. If it isn't Unc than the value is $100 or less probably.

Don't write off the value of the lower catalog price pieces if they are uncirculated since high
end grades even of common dates might have a substantial premium.

    Good luck.

Nice send it in MS63/4 RD good price.image

    Hoard the keys.
  • Looks like a really nice coin. It is worth at least $100 in that condition.

Out of curiousity, what date is written on the case?

It was given to my father on his birthday so the case has his name and the date it was given to him.

    Looks nice.

It might get 63-64 Red or Red/Brown, as long as those spots between the shoulder and liberty are only toning not more.

I think it's a $100+ as it is raw and more depending how it grades.

I would get the coin slabbed merely for the sentimental value.

  • << <i>I would get the coin slabbed merely for the sentimental value. >>

I was thinking the same thing due to the fact it has more sedimental value than the $100 it would bring. I was just curious for when the day comes that I might be ready to sell a few things he left me.
  • I like the coin. Price guide says that could be worth about $230. The carbon spots don't help it, but don't necessarily hurt it, in my opinion. I'd never sell it.

That's actually a really nice 1931-S. I would pay a couple hundred for it raw but you'll definitely get more for it if it were slabbed.

That's a very nice original Lincoln Cent your father left you. It's certainly uncirculated. I'm guessing you never plan on taking it out of the paper/plastic holder (known as a "2 x 2"). Protect the coin from excessive heat and moisture and it should be safe. And if you ever do remove it from the 2X2, DO NOT touch it with you fingers. Otherwise, oils from your fingers are likely to darken the coin's surfaces which will decrease the coins value.

I am thinking the coin could eventually be affected by the rusting of the staples. I am sure you do not plan on selling this coin, but you may want to have it graded if only to protect it for the long term.

MS63RD... I do see some carbon spots on the obv. Est. value $200~$250.
    Good luck !!!
  • Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'll probably just have it graded and hold on to it for a while like Stealer since it has more sedimentary value than actual worth.
  • ElcontadorElcontador Posts: 7,679 ✭✭✭✭✭
Sorry for your loss. Agree re getting it graded. But still store it in a low humidity environment because the holders are NOT airtight. I wouldn't sell it, either. My father left us a few common date U.S. gold coins, and we aren't selling them, either.

I am a little different, I like to keep coins given to me unslabbed unless they are worth a lot more then $200 or I am planning to sell them. Slabbing takes away a lot of the personel connection IMHO.

there is NO need to send that coin in for grading it can stand on its own merits.

I recomend keeping it as is or sell as is don't throw away $$$$'s on grading you don't need to.

Did matrix ever get the hang of using a file hosting site? I personally don't ever remember him posting a photo. I edit my post frequently as well as I type on google remotes which are small and sometimes hard to type on cause lots of typos.

Do you really have nothing better to do with your time? What's it to you if it is in fact the same person?

The point of the thread was to ask if the coin was worth slabbing, which has been answered without the help from the peanut gallery.
  • That's a nice coin.

I would get it out of that 2x2 ASAP since it may contain chemicals that could damage the coin. I may be wrong, but better safe then sorry. Now many coins have been scratched by staples when removed from 2x2s, so you need to be very careful. To avoid getting oils on the coin, you should wear gloves and handle only by the edges. When removed, put the coin in a non-PVC coin flip -- I don't have any on hand but if you ask nicely a board member may send you one.

And by all means submit for grading.

If it is the sentimental value that you are interested in, why in the world would you want to take it out of that holder with the date hand-written on it...your fathers birth date no less.

Be sure to store it properly and if you are not sure how to do that shoot me a PM.
If you want to sell it then get it slabbed.
If you want to just protect it, put it in a good airtight type holder that will cost a couple of bucks.

Remember that there are always some that will tell you to slab a ham sandwich if you ask, but really ????
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Carbon spots on both sides will limit the appeal.

While the '31-S is a semi-key there are a surprising number of them in high grade. Like the '09-S VDB.

This is a $100 coin that doesn't make sense to slab unless there is some sentimental reason.

Posting style and content? His father died and left him coins? I thought I was the only one.
Avatar - I thought this would be a San Fransisco Giants avatar.
Choice of handle - This is my username on every forum I am a huge baseball memorabilia collector.
Edits - I edited it many times because I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to coins so changed my wording many times for it to make sense to the reader.
I have no idea what you mean by Account set-up

I have no idea who Matrix is, but rest assured, it's two different people fellas.

And for all of those who are wondering why I would take it out of the case, like I said I am a huge baseball memorabilia collector and most of the items my father left were baseball products that he gave to me when I was a child and are the most sentimental to me and are priceless. The case on the other hand, has no sentimental value and I was wondering what would be better to store the coin is without further spotting. Again, thank you to everyone who took the time to respond, it was very much appreciated.

Spend a few dollars on a 3-pack of these and use one for the '31-S. It will protect the coin and inhibit further spotting and toning.

I left a note on his bst thread, something is just not right, why create two different stories as to where the coin came from. Matrix was my first thought too...........Hopefully he will come back and explain why two different stories for the same coin?Enjoy image

    Wow - what a character.
Concocts a big story, gets lots of advice and sympathy from the forum, says he'll hold onto it for sentimental value,
waits a couple days, then slaps it up on the BST with a different story, like people have forgotten or don't check both venues.
