good point cladking

recently acquired hundreds of images for definitive and some only reported as counterfeit holders. lets see if we can figure them out

i'm also going to work on getting some actual coins for comparison/imaging. still in negotiations.

for better or worse, here we go. hope it runs a while cuz i'm gonna add plenty over time.

if i don't add worthy images, it is because i don't have better ones to use. just remember, sometimes it is tough in the jungle

Which one is authentic?

1. 1909-S VDB 1c - left authentic/right counterfeit
2. 1796 $1 Small Eagle - left counterfeit/right authentic
3. 1900 Lafayette - as reported - all counterfeit in counterfeit holders. cropped 3 images Per CU member requests.
4. 1955 5c DDO-Déjà Vu - left authentic/right counterfeit
5. 1916-D 10c - Oh boy here we go again >< - both counterfeit
6. 1914-D A little more effort required - A,B,C,E authentic - D,F,G counterfeit - as reported. i agree 99% without better images. "E" is one I purchased from a company that bought 15 million wheat cents recently. They are stacked 3 feet high by 20+ feet wide by 10+ feet long on pallets.

16. 1795 $1 Draped B. Small E. (although the eagle looks like something from clash of the titans) - real or not? added 7-15-12

I don't think there's any on-topic thread that doesn't insult anyone
which would be required to have pre-approval. Controversial threads
always run a grave risk of turning bad and getting nuked. I'd suggest
that you save a copy and just post it.

Looks like some people beat me to it.

The holder on the right (the fake one,) for one thing is done in the wrong font. It also appears to be too stark, the value between blue background and dark lettering is too far off.

Green? They're both blue taken under different lighting conditions, am I wrong?

Saw my first counterfeit PCGS slab yesterday. The coin looked suspect, and as I applied a "twisting pressure" to the slab in my hands, I heard it "crackle". The slab with coin inside should have weighed a certain amount and did not. The font was smaller, the color on the label was off and the coin number matched an F12 at PCGS' website, but this coin was in a holder with a label marked F15.

The collector who came to the shop allowed me to take a couple of photos but asked that I not post them until he could get his money back.

The one on the left is real. The holder on the right is a fake.

There are subtle, but noticable, differences in the font that help to distinguish the two. The fakes are definitely getting better, though.

The key is to focus on for counterfeit detection .... is the font on the label.

Forget about the coin (I find detecting counterfeit coins a lot harder than counterfeit labels).
But some of you guys might be better at that.

To me, the label tells all.

(For example: Look how THICK the font is on the "XF40" characters on the RHS slab ... it just looks completely wrong)

I see you now added a bust dollar, I think this time its the right coin. For those just reading this the penny was first shown when most everyone said left coin, the bust dollar has since been added.

Agreed, the (smudged) bad font on the holders makes it easy to spot. If it were simply the coins shown it would be much, much harder. Maybe post a few with the slab cropped out?

1796 on the right is authentic. Smudged lettering on the left one is quite obvious, as has been stated above.

The fake coins are:

1. 1909-S VDB 1c ->>> RIGHT
2. 1796 $1 Small Eagle ->>> LEFT
3. 1900 Lafayette ->>> bad pictures - the middle one has authentic-looking luster - but not enough resolution to confirm. I'll presume the LEFT one is fake.
4. 1955 5c DDO-Déjà Vu ->>> RIGHT (the slab looks good, but the coin itself is a very low-quality copy)
5. 1916-D 10c - Oh boy here we go again >< ->>> left coin looks like a genuine obverse, but slab is slightly suspect. Right slab looks ok, but coin itself looks fake.

6. 1914-D A little more effort required ->>> ""D" and "G" are obvious 1944-D coins with altered date. Mint marks also look wrong on "C" and "F".

wow....the 14-d a good one. If I had to pick one real one, it would be E. Two, it would be B,E. Three? I say no... A, the "D" is suspiciously too far left.
If I had to buy one, I would get E, feeling confident. B, I am still not 100% - would want to see die crack by Lincolns shirt to edge... The others? Forget it - I knew right away not authentic.

Hope I am right.

the fake 1955 DDO is so bad its almost laughable. mr magoo could spot that one. the style of the lincoln portrait is obviously copied from a much later date
