Charmy's February 2012 LONG BEACH SHOW Report w/Lots of Pics!

BANDWITH ISSUE HAS BEEN FIXED!!
For those of you who haven’t been to the Long Beach Convention Center, I took a few photos of the outside and surrounding area. It really is a beautiful building, with lots of great restaurants and activity right across the street.
Set up was Wednesday afternoon and went very smoothly. After my booth was organized and ready for business, we relaxed for a minute with, of course, a nice bottle of Italian wine.

Then I walked around to see if I could find some coins I may need, say hi to friends, harass Todd and his dad, etc. Then it was off to dinner. We went to our usual Wednesday night Italian restaurant, Piccolo’s. There were six of us and we each brought a bottle of wine so we could have our customary wine tasting. Yes, I know, six bottles is quite a lot of wine, even for me and my group, so we did have quite a bit left over that we took with us. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of our table filled with all the wine bottles, but you can imagine the stares we received from the surrounding tables!
On Thursday, the show opened with quite a few people streaming in. We were very busy most of the day, and I did a lot of buying. I was offered some amazing and top quality coins that I couldn’t pass up! I think I spent more at this show than I have at any one show in the past! I kept feeding Todd little bunches of coins to photograph throughout the show – I can’t wait to get them up on my website!

When I was taking Sandy’s picture, my good buddy Larry walked by so he was more than happy to pose with Sandy!
Cindy of VAMS & More brought me these two bottles of wine. She said the chocolate wine actually tastes like chocolate and kaluha but is made from wine. She said the Pride wine is one of her favorites – I can’t wait to try them both!
Later in the day I was able to walk around, see the exhibits on display and some interesting booths

I just thought this very old Cola tray was really cool!
Thursday night after the show, a couple of my booth helpers, along with my hubby and son, went out to dinner at our favorite local Mexican restaurant – SuperMex! They make the best salsa and Cadillac margaritas!!
Friday, as is typical, was slower than Thursday so there was a little more “goofing off” time. A friend of mine who collects very interesting and often rare and unusual coin-related items stopped by my table and showed me some of his purchases….
He had the authentic bronze placque of Lincoln that was designed by Victor Brenner in 1907 – two years before the Lincoln penny was created! It’s very similar to the one discussed in a recent Coin World article.
This is a very usual Hobo nickel – look at his nose!
This is a rare South American counter-stamped store card – it says “Business House of F Pinto – Manager”
This one has something to do with a baby’s potty training!
Mike/Illini was at the table when my friend was showing us these coins, and Mike pulled out this neat counterstamp
Rich, my table helper, brought these two bottles of wine, which we consumed with a lot of help from customers and other dealers who “just happened by”! They were both delicious!
On Friday night we went to PF Changs for dinner, then it was off to the Commerce casino for some poker. I was happy to end up about $60 ahead!
Saturday started out slow, but soon picked up. There were lots of kids for the pirate treasure hunt, and lots of families helping kids find the coins they were looking for. I didn’t think we were going to do much business, but I was pleasantly surprised when I sold several larger, more expensive coins later on Saturday, including an 1856 Flying Eagle in PCGS PF63 and an 1877 Indian cent in PCGS MS63 RB, so that really helped make my show – not to mention that it will help pay for all the coins I bought at the show!!
By the way, I heard that after next year, Collectors Universe will do away with the February Long Beach show. I was very surprised to hear this, and hope they will reconsider, but we will see. All in all, this has always been a good show for me, but I understand some changes need to be made in order to bring back the overall success of this show – and I do hope that more effort is put into doing just that.
So my next show(s) will be the PCGS Las Vegas show which overlaps with the Las Vegas Coin Club Show at the Palace Station in early March, so it will be easy to do two shows in one report!

well Charmy, you finally did it! - bandwidth exceeded LOL
if you have a website and hosting, you can just upload the images there and have them indefinitely with unlimited bandwidth
just use filezilla for your ftp transfer. it is very quick and easy

I hadn't heard about the possibility of losing one of the three yearly shows. If they had to get rid of one it souldn't be the February one.

I always thought the June Long Beach show would be the first to go. Would make more sense to keep February and September so you have two per year, pretty evenly spaced out. Having a June and Sept only show would be too close together and there would be too long of a gap (9 months) between shows! Oh well!!!

Ditto those comments. Another factor for northern dealers is a trip to sunny California in February. Having two shows evenly spaced approximately six months apart, with a "winter" show would make the most sense. Also some said that this year February didn't have many east coast show conflicts. Isn't that one reason east coast dealers have stopped attending, is because there is a Baltimore show the week before or week after? The recent addition of a third Baltimore show and a second ANA show are factors in shrinking the Long Beach show.
The Brooklyn Brewery makes a dark chocolate stout that I highly recommend as a pairing with thick beef, like broiled prime rib or standing rib roast. It's seasonal, and best served aged, chilled or room temperature.
It also drinks well standalone. It's nose is quite nice, and simply a fantastic treat in the afternoon or evening.
FYI - the alcoholic content is not low.

Hey Don, along the subject of shows, I'm pretty darn bummed that the Santa Clara show got the axe.
For me anyway, it was always a fun weekend not to mention in my own backyard.
I think the Long Beach show needs a shot in the arm - maybe some new managers with fresh ideas. Not just David doing his MC bit on Saturdays. (Have him do it on Friday too)
1) Table fee rebates for those who send out LB official mailings (and e-mails) to their customers.
2) More hobby advertising.
3) Have a web page with links to the dealers web sites who will be attending.
4) facebook, twitter accounts. YouTube page.
5) ask all registrants to give their e-mail address (for a chance at a free coin, perhaps) and send them reminders prior to the next show to return to their favorite show.
6) twist the arms of the dealers on the east coast to come out again.
7) lower table fees.
I must say, I was happy that the music was now 1970's and 80's, instead of the usual 60's stuff.

That's right, it's hand engraved and the other side is the obverse of a Seated Dollar which I believe to be dated 1856... it's hard to tell because the hole is right at the date. Was thinking of getting some photos of it up and asking about it since I don't know much about it. I just thought it looked cool so I got it from one of the local coin shops.

Todd is right on the money. I also noticed that fewer dealers seemed to leave after Friday as Saturday morning seemed nearly as busy as Thursday/Friday. But yeah, the last few Long Beach shows seemed to close up around 12:30-1:30pm on Saturday and probably 75% of the tables were shut down by 3pm or so. This time, I left the show around 2:30pm on Saturday and felt like I was the one leaving early as it was much busier than usual for that time. Sure, some were packing up and leaving, but not even close to as many as in recent shows there.

I agree that this Long Beach show was busier than the last one, and the back of the room definitely had more buzz than the front of the room on Saturday.

I went to the show just to drop off some stuff for grading at PCGS, but I COULDN'T pass up your booth, and had to buy a couple of gorgeous toned pennies.
Of course, continuing my tradition of bad behavior, I gave you the wrong username for me on the boards. I use "sgrenald" on a bunch of other (non-coin) boards. Oops! Sorry!
Oh, and good news! Neither of the cents overlap existing coins in my collection! (one of my numismatic goals is to get a set of toned pennies)
