The dumbest coin criminal award goes to…. (true story)

Hello fellow numismatists, this is my very first post on this site although I have been reading posts for months now. To commemorate my overdue arrival, I thought I would share this rather humorous and extremely ignorant news item form Yahoo news.

Tim

“Police in Oregon are searching for a suspect who allegedly stole a rare coin collection from his own father and traded it in for pennies on the dollar at a local coin-counting machine.
On Christmas day, Dan Johnson Jr. and two friends broke into a shed on his father's property, where the coin collection was stowed. The burglars also reportedly stole tools and two safes, which had approximately 50 to 60 pounds of silver and jewelry inside.
So what explains the colossal miscue? Authorities say that the simplest explanation is the most persuasive one. "The obvious answer is that the crooks were idiots," Dan Johnson Sr. told local affiliate Fox 12. "To not know the value of what they had taken, just to get pocket change for it. Just really a stupid person. Makes me feel good he was a stupid person and didn't realize what he had."
The thieves took the coin collection, worth several thousand dollars, and dropped it into a Coinstar machine, where they received $450. They were unsuccessful in their attempts to put the silver coins into the machine and eventually took those to a local bank.
"It was an inheritance, which made it even worse because I lost an inheritance that was meant to go forward for my children and grandchildren," Johnson said of the collection that his son had purloined.
However, Johnson is now working with the Multnomah County Sheriff's deputies to sift through the Coinstar machine looking for his collection. The bank is also returning the silver coins to Johnson.
Police have caught two of the suspects involved in the crime, both of whom they say are cooperating in the investigation” (Yahoo News, January 06, 12).

    Welcome image

For the story, the fact it comes from Oregon makes it quite believeable image
The son, and his friends, were probably on "medicinal" herbs.....

  • Yes, such an event would likely severe their relationship even more, as I suspect it was probably already strained. As a counselor, I have dealt with such issues a lot over the years.

BTW, who knew that these machines would not accept silver coins? I doubt that many people would be foolish or desperate enough to find out.
  • I'm glad to hear the owner will be able to retrieve a large portion of his loss. Yeah, stupid son but what about the father ? Storing his multi-thousand dollar collection in a SHED ?
  • You may not be that far off? I work as an addictions counselor and people who use or abuse substances can become quite desperate for their next “fix”

Coinstar is crazy for not modifying their machines to take silver. It'd be like someone offering to trade a $10 bill for your $1 bill and you saying no.

Thus another good reason why one should frequent such forums.

More likely that they were prescription opiate or methamphetamine addicts.

I wondered about that , isnt Oregon one of those states where potheads can just grow their own and be done with it ? Wouldn't need Daddy's coins to score there i'd have thought..methhead..i can see that. or alcoholic

Oregon, in many ways and places, is still all about the hippy way of thinking/life.
Seattle is bad enough. San Fran is bad enough. Oregon is right in the middle of it all. I believe they had articles more than a few times about needles in the streets in Portland, MJ everywhere, etc.

Id like to have said i'm glad i reside in rural Pa where the law still means something but after thinking for a moment i realise i personally know two lovely families..no..three that have went through chaos with the kids doing drugs.I wonder if there's anywhere left untouched by it.

Thanks for posting (and welcome)...I'll have to see if it's anyone I know (Mom and sisters, etc. live in OR).

BTW It's OreGUHN, not OreGONE (really crack a smile when I hear you East Coaster's say it that way).

As far as drugs go...they are quite pervasive, but they are only part and parcel of the block of things wrong with Oregon. Their criminal laws, regulations, restrictions, freaky weird focus on everything non-human (at the cost of humanity), and cost of living are a few. Not to mention the rain, rain, rain.

It's so unfortunate that an area that has some of the most beautiful scenery (you can see 4 mountain peaks from downtown Portland) has to be peopled by some of the more wacky liberals and idealists in the country. Oh, and those are MOUNTAINS...not like the Mt. Pocono Hills..hehe.

Welcome backintime.Always good to see a newbie posting.By the way, some posters referred to previous threads which talk about coinstar and bank counting machines....neither of them will accept silver coins because silver coins dont weigh the same as post silver coins, thus the machines will reject them.Thats why an old timer will check the return slot on these machines.Enjoy the hobby.image

Meth addicts account for a very major share of crime here in Oregon. Scary looking addicts too, with faces ruined by the drugs.
