1934 Peace dollar (w/grading poll)

I got this from John G. ("MrScience") off BST yesterday. He was gracious enough to let me barter for half of the cost, and to let me save and recycle all of his images, which are exponentially better than any feeble attempt at photography I could make.
This looks to be a lovely Peace dollar, and has the appearance I prefer in those: mostly white, lots of luster, clean fields, and even a hint of peripheral toning. Furthermore, it's a slightly less common date with a mintage below a million pieces.
As you may have guessed from the images, it is already in TPG plastic. I'll reveal the TPG grade (or lack thereof) later.
(If you recognize it from BST, I'll trust you to vote the "neutral" option in the poll.)

right, to me I want to say MS66, but when I say MS66 there usually a MS64, so I'll say MS65
But thats a gem in my book any day of the week, plus it my Mom's Birthyear

<< <i>Gee LordM, those can be tough to grade, well at least for me, I never get them Peace dollars right, to me I want to say MS66, but when I say MS66 there usually a MS64 >>
Me too, fella. Me too. Good thing it's in plastic, huh?
I should mention that if I were sitting in your chair, and didn't know anything about this coin, I too would have thought MS66, but I probably would have hedged my bets and said 65, based on the photos. We'll wait a little while before I reveal the full slab photo.
Haven't seen this in hand yet- it just shipped today- but I am looking forward to it. I've never really collected Peace dollars by date (though I bought a circ set in a Dansco once). As for the nicer MS coins, I've had a few type coins. Best I've ever had in the High Relief 1921 was MS64. Otherwise for the regular series, MS65. I do not recall ever owning an MS66.

But, just a historical perspective. In every grading poll, someone early on casts a ballot for AU58. I've seen it for years, on every series, even on MS67s and MS68s. Either there is an anonymous Board member who just likes to do this, or someone needs to work for YAGMS Grading Service (You Ain't Gettin' Mint State!). If you look at that coin and want to grade it less than MS, where is the telltale chatter in the field that always belies some wear? The high points? Sheeez . . look at any BuffNicks from Branch Mints in the 20s and tell me the high points are worn. But . . . AU, in (almost) every case, there will be telltale 'chatter' in the fields. This coin is pristeen (not Pistareen). I am tempted to think this coin is an MS66 but I have no experience there. I do, however, think I have experience in seeing the (quite routinely ignored) chatter in the fields that signifies wear (as in the slight jingling in a pocket for a couple of days).
Great coin . . . and other than the slight lack of filling in the high points of the obverse die (OOOOOOOHHHHH --- AU 58 !!!!!!!!!!) which is exceptionally common on a Peace dollar (Numismatics 101), this is a spankin' super piece!
OK . . just had to get it off my chest. Yeah . watch this thing get AU-58-ed by our hosts . . !!!
Hey Robertson . .gimme some love!

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

I've noticed that. The dread "AU58 Lurker" has been active on a few of my polls, maybe. But not too many. With me normally being a circ Type guy, many of the coins I've posted were nowhere near 58, so that would have been a blessing!
(I should confess that I've been an "AU58" voter on a lot more Peace dollars than probably deserved it, myself.)
I seem to pick up one or two who go with the "Genuine/No Grade/Problem coin" option every time, too (hey, look- somebody's been there and done that on this coin, already!) But they seldom explain why.
One of these days I'm gonna throw out a "Gennie" or Net Grade or "Details" slab, just for kicks, and that person is gonna be right for once.
I'm sure there is a pretty wide margin of error on these polls, but look at it this way- do the TPGs put assign thirty graders to look at each coin? Don't think so. So even though the level of experience of some voting in the poll does not match that of your average TPG grader, these polls draw in specialists from each series, too, and it's always educational to see what they have to say.
PS- 29 votes as I type this. I usually do the reveal around the 30-vote count.
I'll let it run for a few more votes before discreetly posting a link to a picture of the slab.

Great coin!
Oh . . . dug out a 1941 and 1942-S Lincoln at the Tokyo Trolley in Wendover and thought of you. Obviously dropped by gunners during the WWII training. Also a USA dinner fork and some other artifacts I donated to the HS Social Studies Dept. at our school. But . . . the best was 14 miles south of Wendover . . . the rarest of the rare. The absolute ultimate. Just a handful (less than 5???) have seen it . . .
Wait for it . . .

Wanna piece? Wanna get 'titaniumed' ??? If so, just let me know. The stuff goes for $185 per 1"x1" piece (but it is a Federal offense to sell it). I'll give it to you if you want! I have LOTS of it!

Actually, I think I did pretty well.
The guy who submitted it might have been disappointed.
I have fair bit less than MS64 money in it, if one uses Redbook and Numismedia as a guide. I think the PCGS priceguide is a tad lower than those. I don't use Greysheet so I have no clue of Bid, or Ask, or any of that. (Maybe that's to my advantage, sometimes- I guess not being a Greysheet user is a double-edged sword.)

I was fairly satisfied with this grade when I submitted it some years ago. Now I might disagree with some other Peace dollar grades!. The chatter on the jawline, neck, and hair, as well as some scattered small marks in the fields, presumably kept it from MS65. [Rant] Of course, a MS64 Morgan would look like it's been in a knife fight compared to a MS64 Peace! [/Rant]

Only if he was the one who had it slabbed. If he bought it for 64 money, then he is the winner!
I voted 65.
With Peace dollars luster plays such a huge role (especially with our hosts) that usually it is hard to get a good read without coin in hand. As a rule I will not purchase a peace from a photo.
With that said, these photos appear good enough to determine the coin is a solid 65 regardless.
I would say that this coin was really well bought at 64 money or below.
2012 Redbook says $450 in MS64.
PCGS Priceguide says $425.
Numismedia says $394.
I have $381 in it. MrScience had it on BST for $375, I believe. I saw it and thought,
"Man, this is a coin with some real upside potential. But I don't have $375 handy". (Conversations like this go on inside my head all the time.)
So I basically shared these thoughts with him (as I just have with y'all), and he graciously agreed to allow me to swap for half of the value.
So the price was $190 cash (PayPal), and two Bust coins (which were both the topic of previous polls like this: the 1835 Bust half dime and the 1838 RE Bust half). I'd had that pair out on BST for a total of $191 asking price, and he not only agreed to trade, but accepted my trades at my full ask price. (This propels him pretty high on my "Nice Guy To Deal With" list for the week, if not the month.)
So in reality I have less than that $381 in it. I did well on the purchase of the two Bust coins, so those savings have helped me here.
Sometimes I really enjoy being a "flipper". Win some, lose some, but I do not foresee a loss on this one.
I do not know what Greysheet says on this re. Bid and Ask, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that were I a "slave to the Sheet", I might have overlooked the potential of this coin. This might just be one rare time where my stubborn refusal to use Greysheet was actually an advantage- who knows?

I agree with the grade and think it's MS64 PQ, but don't know if it would go 65 or not.
I've definitely owned worse in PCGS MS65 holders, at least once.
In hand, it's pretty much a white coin. The pictures, just as the seller said, rather overstate the peripheral toning and understate the luster.
