The "official" how to send a giant box of ten 25th Anniversary Sets to PCGS for the lowest

What do you guys think would be the cheapest/best option? I'm thinking, from what I've heard, the two boxes MIGHT fit in an 18x18x16 box. The insurance through USPS is so expensive though....Are there any alternatives that i could use for just this one package?

I can tell you though, the heavier and bigger box items, it's better to use fedex or ups, they are cheaper than usps

True, but will they insure them...I believe FEDEX does not insure coins...

It looks like Priority mail and Fedex ground would be just about the same, but the Priority Mail would half half the insurance ($5000) that the Fedex package would have, but it'd likely get there faster....

  • Just to let you know ONLY USPS insures coins that are lost. Fed Ex, UPS and all the others dont so it might be worth it to pay a few extra bucks

box of five is reported to be 15 x 11.5 x 8.5, too large for any flat rate box. Gonna have to go USPS registered to fully insure. Either a single large box or all of the mint boxes taped together and then wrapped with brown kraft paper and sealed, as required, with glue back brown paper tape. I'll be going the single box to hold four boxes of five, registered insured route. OUCH!

For me it would depend where I am sending it. Overnight would cover the insurance because your receipt is for 3k.

I don't no for sure but I would say you would only be reimbursed for your actual payment to the Mint.

That's going to be over 60 lbs. Maybe a box the size of a mini-fridge. Let us know the dimensions. Wow, that is going to take a lot of brown paper tape. Only if they could sell them the size of a paper towel roll. Best of luck to you!!

Since PCGS killed "Collector Fridays" (Boooooooooooooooooooo!!!!), I'm seriously thinking of driving up to the Newport Beach Post office and dropping off my shipment there. I'll use whatever is the cheapest insured method. After all, they are just going to take it from the counter and put it into PCGS's box...

I calculated four boxes of five in a single outer box (approx. 23x16x18) mailed registered, insured for $16K would cost around $100.
Priority mailing fee because of the weight, 50 lbs going about 5 postal zones away (65.05)
Registered fee to include $16K insurance (37.05) - insurance is cheaper with Priority Registered vs. Priority
    Electronic Return receipt (1.15)

If shipped priority without adding extra service of Registered, the insurance costs go much higher.

Registered is the way to go.

Insurance is much cheaper and it moves fast enough to get there in plenty of time.

The safety factor alone is worth the trouble.

I have seen two box sizes posted so far for a 5 set box.

    One at 15 x 11.5 x 8.5
    and one at 14.5 x 11 x 8 weighing 15.25 pounds.

Can anyone else confirm the size?

I was told by one person who filed a $300 claim for a lost coin that he was told that he would probably not even get reimbursed for the $300. There was also a post awhile back where the poster said that he was NOT paid anywhere near what he had insured a coin for. I'd be asking if there is some sort of change that has been made to their coin insurance coverage.

Two months ago I did a price comparison using USPS.com for a 10 pound box with $3000 insurance from me to a BST buyer. I came up with the following:

Standard Priority & insured: $85.50 Special online rate: $81.11
Registered Priority & insured: $71.90 Special online rate: Not available
Express & insured: $82.75 Special online rate: $67.43

I sent it Express with the online rate. The best service for the lowest rate!

Registered priority insured for 10 lbs @ $3K insurance only costs about $49:
10lbs priority to the fartherest US destination (8 zones) = 31.60
    Registered fee with $3k insurance = 17.45

If it would fit, a medium priority flat rate box sent registered would have saved about $20 more. Alot of people don't realize you can take advantage of priority flat rate discount when shipping registered.

My understanding is that PCGS will not accept sealed boxes at shows. Why should they pay all that $$ to ship them back? They did not say that they will accept them as opened if they witness them being opened however so you might ask about that option.

Ideally, they would also let you take back all of the OGP material. It saves them from having to transport all that bulky stuff.

Now that I think about it, that's how I did my UHR First Strike submission. So PCGS will do that.

I'm only 60 miles south of Newport, so it is viable. I will probably have a fairly large box, so it is also about a wash cost-wise and I won't have to worry about it being "lost" in the mail

Thats the conclusion I came to. Was going to send 5 boxes of 5 but that will be over the 70 lb limit. I'll sell the sealed set of 5 and just send the 4 boxes. Thats enough anyway damn the FS fees. I was hoping only two were elegible.

We need to BE SURE that these will be accepted for grading though because, in the past, they were not accepted.
