Odd 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent

cmerlo1cmerlo1 Posts: 7,957 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought this unusual 1909 VDB at the B&M this morning. I figure it's most likely a love token someone started, then spent after removing 'One Cent'. Either that, or it's the coolest filled-die ever!

PMD. Someone wore the middle off to use the wheat stalks for a horse shoe and making a lucky penny. I dont see sanding but im sure someone wore this down to make it like that. I dont think it was a grease filled strike.

I agree- I think the fact that it circulated smoothed everything out- there really isnt any trace of tooling.

I would guess post mint damage too, but in any event that's pretty neat!

It was done a long time ago, and done pretty well. The coin has a consistent wear and color and so it continued to circulate after it was tooled.

Did the tooler also remove the "S"?

Very interesting. I also agree with PMD followed by circulation.

That is an interesting coin.... I would guess PMD... but nicely done... as others have said, perhaps circulation wear eliminated the tool marks. Neat curio. Cheers, RickO

PMD, but very odd. I wonder what they were planning to engrave there?

    I think it's cool.

    But then I would, wouldn't I? image

Very unlikely but is it possible that the center of the reverse die was clogged?

Nah, I agree with the prevailing opinion: PMD (removal of central legend, perhaps for unfinished love token purposes), followed by circulation.
