NGC Gold vs. PCGS Gold

I'm currently looking at 20 gold coins... 14 are in NGC plastic and the remaining 6 are in PCGS plastic. There seems to be more gold coins in NGC plastic... any stories (successful or unsuccessful) crossing NGC to PCGS?

If you're willing to "cross at any grade", most will get into PCGS plastic. MS pieces in NGC holders that you try to cross at the same grade can be tough.

Depends on the individual coins. I've had NGC coins cross higher at PCGS (not cracked out, but crossed over) and vice versa.

I once submitted 3 NGC gold coins still in slabs to crossover at any grade.
One graded higher, one graded lower and the last one stayed at the same grade.

If you want PCGS graded gold coins then buy PCGS graded gold coins and save yourself the grief and expense of crossing NGC slabs to PCGS. There are plenty of PCGS graded gold coins in the marketplace to choose from.

I used to have several boxes of MS63 NGC Saints, quality wise they were all over the place.

I selected a few of the best to send to PCGS. I received one MS65 and a couple of MS64s.

Agree. Nice looking coin but the pics aren't in sufficient detail to see if there is any light wear.

I have had a number of modern gold eagles turn a brass color in PCGS holders. For this reason alone my AGE collection is now in NGC holders. Problem eliminated. Have not seen this problem with any other gold in PCGS holders. I did note the same problem in a few ICG holders. My best guess is chemical reaction with lables.

No matter what grade is on the slab, of any company, you have to judge the merits

of each coin for yourself. If you are unwilling to learn how to do that, for yourself,

then you are going to get burned big time.

Obviously, they have to be taken on a per coin basis. However, my attempts to cross NGC gold to PCGS have yielded three that crossed at the same grade and three that crossed one grade higher.

Bear, with all respect, your previous advice was for us to buy only PCGS coins with a preference for PCGS + graded coins. Are you now suggesting that a buyer should evaluate all coins (in any holder or raw) and to buy the best regardless of the brand of slab or raw status?

Even though I have a destinct preference, I always make my own judgement

as to each coin. Regardless of the grade on the slab, the coin must have what

I call the WOW FACTOR. Yes, I do reject PCGS coins that do not meet my standards.

Having said that, If a coin is up to snuff, then the sale value is enhanced by a PCGS

slab and a CAC sticker. The Plus grades are also of great benefit. Obviously I will

buy NGC coins as I have two of them in my collection.

While I may make recommendations, each collector must decide for themselves what

or if any of the recommendations they are comfortable with. I do not ever say that my way

is the only way or even the right way. However it is my way and has served me well these

many years. I hope other advanced collectors, with different methods, will continue to instruct

new collectors in the way they have successfully collected over the years. Not everyone will be

comfortable with only one way of thinking, or one way of doing things. I merely wish to open the

door to enlightenment , to get people to think, to plan and to be judgmental when they buy a

coin, be it VG. AU or MS-67+. Once people realize that any hobby that you put money into, on a

regular basis ,should entail the same scrutiny one would use for any other investment. One can not

really separate the hobby from the economic realities of, fair return for money spent.

PCGS and NGC have graded similar number of gold coins. And their standards are fairly equivalent though I'd give the nod to PCGS for being a touch more conservative....a tenth of
a point or two in general. I really wouldn't care which TPG graded my gold as long as it got stickered.

    Realone's 1894 $10 Lib appears to be a MS63/64. I swag on the 64.

There are good coins in both NGC and PCGS holders. When you get to the point when it is just about the coin it self and not the holder you will understand.

The $10 lib posted is a MS61 in my book. Very cool it has been in the family for a long time- this trumps the grade no matter what it is. image

I think this is best answer I've seen on here to the question: "Do you consider buying coins an investment."

Buy the coins you want in the plastic you want. Playing the crackout game it like gambling... the players may win once in a while, but most of the time you lose.

I purchased an expensive (at least to me) early gold in an NGC AU50 holder. Sent it to NGC for a grade review... they 100% verified it was AU50. Sent it to PCGS for a crossover at any grade (dumb on my part, yes), came back as a 40. Yay, lost a lot of money. Sent it back to NGC as they were so sure it was an AU50. This time it came back as a 45 (hmmm... how did that happen? oh yeah, grading guarantee... they didn't have to put out any money since it was no longer in an NGC holder). What a waste of my time and money. Both NGC and PCGS made out in grading fees, and I was out $3k. Lesson learned on my end.
