Awesome Cherry Pick, Triple Error Coin

ctf_error_coinsctf_error_coins Posts: 15,433 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just got one of the most awesome Cherry Picks that I have had in a long time. The thing is, I cherried this from my own collection. I just recently did a complete physical inventory of my error coin collection and came up with numerous extras and doubles that I decided to put on my website or sell on the bay. When I looked closely at this large broadstruck coin I noticed something ........

These Huge Broadstruck coins are hard to see evidence of a double strike as most of (the first strike) or all of it usually gets wiped out by the second strike. I think the rim and rim burrs help to say this was double struck but Would like Fred or Mike to chime in.

Good catch! The first strike is also visible at the N in CENT.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Wow, nice eye, I didn't notice that until now, cool.

As to the nice catch (the double strike) I had already marked it as most likely a double strike, so that was Not the awesome catchimage

<< <i>As far as double struck goes, don't you thing it's more imagination than real thing........the definition of actual d/s is getting a bit skewed imho. >>

So I am imagining the Rim Burr? Please explain how the double rim and rim burr got there on a single strike?

Double struck means the thing was struck 2 times.

I don't think it is double struck, just products of metal flow and wishful thinking. The doubled profile is not nearly as strong as others I have seen and I believe is refered to as split line doubling. The rim is left over characteristics of upset edge from the planchet since it was struck out of collar. IMO.

I know these are tough. I have seen hundreds of them. This one tho, I do believe was double struck, but I could be wrong. How many double struck dimes have you seen that show NO signs of a double strike EXCEPT they have reeding which prove the D/S?, Cents obviously don't have reeding.

Anyway, everyone so far is missing the really important error ........

I have about 5% of all the 2000 Wide AM cents (mostly in MS 64) graded at PCGS, that isimage So if you want, I'll trade you two non problems in PCGS plastic in MS 64 condition, for your one raw problem. image

Kind of shows you how slow we are, doesn't it ? Gee, maybe there are only five people on the boards and in between running the shop and taking photos, doing taxes, answering phones, trying to locate a one ounce gold coin dated 1995 at 3 other dealer's , plus writing Mr Hernandez at PCGS an email..., along with buying a 1909 S VDB today, some think this is the only place where a guy who types 75 wpm sits. I wrote Jaime from my Blackberry image

Yes all wide AM's plus I think 4 or 5 additional off center type 2's.

As to the photography of them, I will image them someday, I'm just so backed up now that I will have to find time in the future.

It is a nice little short set for sure.

It is double-struck, and shows many indications of being a double-strike. There is a "line" around the outer area between the strike and rim as well as "field-doubling" around many of the design elements. I actually have several rolls of these which I picked out of a larger group of broadstrike cents. Some coins show multiple, tiny lines in the area between the field and rim, and to varying degrees, the coins show the field-doubling. NGC (and maybe PCGS...I've not sent any to them yet) will usually slab multi-struck, broadstruck coins such as yours if the coin shows the field-doubling and the "lines" around the area between the design and rim. Nice cherrypick!
