I bought a bottle of wine to have with dinner last night and the clerk told me.......

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,945 ✭✭✭✭✭
......these folks who run the place are Indian (no not chief Halftown indian...but from the sub continent)...and I usually throw down an old coin for the heck of it. Last night I dropped a columbian half dollar on the counter. After some discussion, he told me a few weeks ago someone spent an 1827 Quarter (and he has it at home). Now, Im not a silver guy but I know that date is "special"...

Of course, he MAY be thinking 1927, but he told me it had 13 stars around it, and a lady on the front. GULP. OK....so Im going to get him to bring it in to let me take a look at it.

......I guess Id get a "you suck" if its a genuine 1827 and I manage to buy it off him for the hundred and twenty five dollars he thinks its worth, eh?

I'd say it's likely a 1927...perhaps he got confused about which sides the stars are on.

Most slabs that get stolen have the coin cracked out since the serial number on the slab enables the stolen coin to be traced back to the victum.

and it also reads like it was spent as a quarter(???)

who'd 1) have one... and 2) spend it instead of taking it to a pawn shop at least?

but maybe the buyer paid him more than face for it.... can't wait for the rest of the story.

    he could come back now...

a lot of his bearish insights were coin related and would fly without question before or after.

he certainly was a good influnce on me. I wouldn't mind seeing him back.

I was thinking of resurrecting some of them and it slipped my mind.

perhaps pulling some coin related ones back will convince him to see an early spring.

Granted, if I were in your shoes I would be sorely tempted but I don't think I'd sleep too well if I went ahead and did it. What if he asked how much you think it is worth? What would you say?

Did he actually tell you the coin was worth $125 or did you suggest that? If he doesn't know anything about coins, I'd be surprised if he came up with a number like $125 for a quarter in the first place.

Tonight Ill see whats up. Talked to his father who runs the place last night, showed him an SLQ and he said "no it didnt look like that". Showed him a picture off coin facts on my iPhone of an 1827 quarter and he said "yes thats what it looks like". Now, maybe they are confusing a quarter with a half dollar, and its a CBH but I dont think so.

If its genuine and I buy it dont worry all you moralists out there Ill just keep my mouth shut about it, send it off to Barry Stuppler to sell for me and that will the end of the tale. Youll know if suddenly I complete the gold dollar collection in nine days image

If it's genuine, a US coin, and dated 1827, I'd bet that it's a half dollar. It would have no denomination on the obverse or reverse, and most non-coin people don't bother looking at the edges of coins. Another possibility: if the owner hasn't seen the coin in a long time, he may be mistaking a large size bust dime with a quarter. I'll be interested in learning the outcome.

So, I'm guessing you don't consider the "50 C." or "25 C." on the reverse to be denominations?
