I bought a bottle of wine to have with dinner last night and the clerk told me.......

......these folks who run the place are Indian (no not chief Halftown indian...but from the sub continent)...and I usually throw down an old coin for the heck of it. Last night I dropped a columbian half dollar on the counter. After some discussion, he told me a few weeks ago someone spent an 1827 Quarter (and he has it at home). Now, Im not a silver guy but I know that date is "special"...
Of course, he MAY be thinking 1927, but he told me it had 13 stars around it, and a lady on the front. GULP. OK....so Im going to get him to bring it in to let me take a look at it.
......I guess Id get a "you suck" if its a genuine 1827 and I manage to buy it off him for the hundred and twenty five dollars he thinks its worth, eh?
will keep the group updated on what transpires here. Namaste

Oh, you are asking to get the moralists all fired up here. Taking advantage of the ignorance of the uninformed and an immigrant to boot. Yes, I can see it coming.

Who in their right mind would have an 1827 Quarter raw?

There is a lot of poverty in this town, and a lot of alcoholics. You never know where they come up with money to pay for those little airplane bottles of Vodka you find all over...and I dont care. If someone managed to squeak an old coin out and spend it.......
same sentiments exactly!
but, ya never know..............

Most slabs that get stolen have the coin cracked out since the serial number on the slab enables the stolen coin to be traced back to the victum.

And where did he get this price from - a 1955 Redbook someone left laying around? Or maybe an Oct Greysheet

and it also reads like it was spent as a quarter(???)
who'd 1) have one... and 2) spend it instead of taking it to a pawn shop at least?
but maybe the buyer paid him more than face for it.... can't wait for the rest of the story.

I think Bear has went into hibernation until the new rules relax a little...
a lot of his bearish insights were coin related and would fly without question before or after.
he certainly was a good influnce on me. I wouldn't mind seeing him back.
I was thinking of resurrecting some of them and it slipped my mind.
perhaps pulling some coin related ones back will convince him to see an early spring.

Here I am!
If it is what we are all hoping it is and you relieve him of his burden for $125.00, I really can't see how that's right. Granted, if I were in your shoes I would be sorely tempted but I don't think I'd sleep too well if I went ahead and did it. What if he asked how much you think it is worth? What would you say?
Here wishing for you to find the real 1827 this way. Exciting!

I think Bear has quite a few nice coins in the Goldberg auction. No selfless promoting by him for sure.
Maybe he is still just grieving. I miss him too. The boards will still be here when he gets back. I''ll
leave a donut out for him. MJ
Ambro, good luck!Interesting story........ MJ
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
If its genuine and I buy it dont worry all you moralists out there Ill just keep my mouth shut about it, send it off to Barry Stuppler to sell for me and that will the end of the tale. Youll know if suddenly I complete the gold dollar collection in nine days

and I'm worried it's stolen.
was it similar to this?
If it is, it's mine... I lost one.... PM me and I'll give you my address.
(something tells me he's already thinking about it being stolen)

...................the only good thing is now I dont have to worry about an angry Sikh coming to chop my head off after I nabbed his 100K coin for $125.
but, hey, it was fun while is lasted, eh?
But how does someone mistake a large coin like the Peace Dollar as a quarter, especially with ONE DOLLAR on the reverse?
But thanks for the fun read!
Ben
Hey........they are from INDIA. We got people born and raised in this country who dont know what kind of coins are circulating!
yeah I wondered about the 'stars' too, I guess talking to two different people about one thing got it all confused.

<< <i>If it's genuine, a US coin, and dated 1827, I'd bet that it's a half dollar. It would have no denomination on the obverse or reverse, and most non-coin people don't bother looking at the edges of coins. Another possibility: if the owner hasn't seen the coin in a long time, he may be mistaking a large size bust dime with a quarter. I'll be interested in learning the outcome.
Jim >>
So, I'm guessing you don't consider the "50 C." or "25 C." on the reverse to be denominations?
