My first submission to JA, my first gold bean! ... [Pic now added to first post!]

Sent 4 coins in, just received the results by email today ...

1) no sticker image
2) Passed image
3) Exceeded imageimageimage
4) Passed image

The gold sticker is on the one coin that I was really expecting to sticker in the first place, and the reason for the entire submission (the others pretty much went along for the ride.

1848 D/D $5 PCGS AU53. It is truly a special coin from Dahlonega, with a PCGS population of only 15 in all grades. I picked it up raw in a local estate auction some months back, marked as a VF on the 2x2, and have posted it here once before.

As my photography skills have proven to be woefully inadequate, I'm going to send it to one of our more capable forumites for their treatment.

I don't have the coins back in hand yet, but color me happy anyway!

10/19 edit:
Coin received and sent to Todd at BluCC Photography (blu62vette), who I think did an excellent job of capturing the true look of the coin...

Thanks to Todd not only for his fine photo work, but also for his super quick turnaround!

I'm trying to decide what to do with this beauty. I want to hang on to it, but I'm by no means a Southern Gold specialist, and my wife thinks it should go into the FUN sale. I like it!

Congrats. I would love to see how the gold sticker looks with a gold coin. image

Unfortunately I don't think half of my coins would sticker, of the half that would I think 1 or 2 might go gold. I'll just keep the dream alive a bit longer so I won't be sending them in anytime soon. image

Besides the obvious grade difference, was it marked as a D/D?

No, it was listed as an 1848-D $5 gold piece, VF.

Does this mean your 1848 D/D is really an AU55? Is there a big difference in value and are you going to send it in for a grade review?

I do not see the upside to doing such. Why bother?

I agree. I'm perfectly happy with the coin in the AU53 holder, with the gold bean. I have no plans to resubmit it.

I have never seen a gold bean before. They were kind of like that pot of gold on the other side of the rainbow. Now I see there is such a thing, congratulations.

image The CRO boys said in the last Road Report that CAC is only giving out the gold bean two or three times out of a thousand, so I would say you did all right.

Congratulations!!! And I think it is also fair to say...You Suck!!! I would imagine that given it was labeled as VF at purchase with no mention of the D/D you paid no where near AU money for it....or for that matter D/D AU money! Nice job!

I have had the coin for a day to take photos and it is just amazing. A very nice original piece with some good luster left. Great color and what an amazing find! When I saw the gold bean I was a little amazed, that was the first one I have seen and this coin is worth it!
