1st few shot of new Lens Nikkor 85mm Micro Tilt & Shift. "Calling Mr GOODMAN". SETTING

This Lens is a pain in the a$$!!! Definitely need a lot of practice like Mr Goodman said.
Here are some shots that took about 1 hr. Three stinking pictures!!! The coins were
tilted about 5 deg. Oh yeah, no reverse shot of the dime...I'm tired!!!image

    Stunning!

    Cool!

It would be interesting and instructive if you could compare these shots with your "best" images of these coins taken with a conventional macro lens. Can you get right on that? image

Tough lens to learn, not for the faint of heart. Keep practicing, it will get easier. I do about 99% of my normal coin images with it.

Here is a tilted macro shot (image just resized, no crop) - not done with the 85mm PC micro.image

  • Mr Goodman,

I bought your book when it first came out (excellent by the way). Do you use/attached the
Kenko extension or the 1.4x Mag converter? Also, any "quick tips" for better focusing?

    Thanks!!!

I use a 25mm extension tube with the 85 to give a little more magnification. I am always bothered by the slight loss of sharpness that I see with TC's.

Focusing with tilt is a little tricky. here's how I go about it. Takes good eyes.

    1) focus on the part of the coin closest to the lens.
    2) adjust tilt until the farthest portion of the coin comes into focus.
    3) You will probably need to repeat this process a couple times as the tilt will affect the near focus.

Do all the focusing with the aperture open (older PC, I think the new one has an automatic aperture)

  • Thanks for the tips!!! I agree w/ the loss of sharpness w/ the TC. What I was doing was focusing on the NearSide of the coin and tilt the lens and focus on the FarSide of the coin. Maybe I'll start at the middle/center and tilt and focus either NS of FS. Will practice more later today.

Pinealbany, an hour well spent. Very impressive images. I've been using the 85mm T/S lens too and I agree, it's a bit tricky, but you've done very well. My photos aren't nearly as good. I love the color of the '51-S. How did you get it? What lights? What color setting? Photoshop adjustments made to color?
  • zeebob,

2 OTT Lights. No Photoshop adjustment. I did some experimenting w/ the color settings that worked well. So well that the photos looks exactly like the coins w/ out any color adjustments. I used the "custom color settings", picked II RGB, Auto on saturation. These are the 2 fine adjustments that I can remember changing. I will double check my settings and post them for you to see. I know there was a couple more. Try taking some pix w/ your old settings and take some pix w/ these new settings, compare and you'll see.

    Thanks!!!

  • zeebob,

Here are the settings from my Nikon D80. I have not tried this on my Nikon D300 but I'm pretty sure it will also do it.
Optimize Image; Custom Function and follow the other setting selections. Also, if you/anyone can do your before/old
settings and try this new settings. Let us all see a before and after pix. Please, NO image enhancing.image

  • More practice...Still a little blurry on upper side. Color is Right On though.
