Any idea on the rarity of these? I.E. what's the ratio between 07 and 08 reverses?

Well Dang! A whole new era of bullion collecting just opened up for me!

    Nice catch John.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Somewhat similar to the Type I and Type 2 1976 Ike reverses.

Edited to add: Will the TPGs be designating the 2007-S proof Thomas Jefferson dollars that were struck with the edge collar segments switched, putting the mottoes out of order?

Only time will tell... from what I'm hearing, every batch is different, and it seems that only the most recent batches have been showing up with the Rev of 07. It's probably a crap shoot... out of a box 100, you might find 80, 90, or 100% Rev of 07, but then you could have a box of 100 with none.

    A box of 100 - 2008-W ASE's yielded only 28 - 2007 Reverse Style Coins.

These were scattered throughout the flat shipping box in no particular order.

For some reason the USM shipped 96 in the "100 style" flat ship box and 4 in another box.

I wonder if the reverse dies from 2007 were used early in the coining, or late, how many reverse dies from 2007- one/two/three, if purchasing now would you receive more?

    Anyone searching current orders?
  • CasmanCasman Posts: 3,935 ✭✭
Only 28? That's almost 30% which I think is good, I just went to check my orders yesterday and they are gone/disappeared off the order history page, don't yet know why and haven't called.

  • My order of 25 are all 2008 reverses
  • KaelasdadKaelasdad Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭
I wouldnt call them common as dirt.

Anybody recall how many ASE collectors there are? I seem to remember 250,000 Reverse Proofs being gobbled up like crazy. In the latest NN, the sales for 2007 W ASE show 563,000 sold. If you were an ASE collector, wouldnt you need a variety for your set, the first and only variety in the whole 20 some odd years of the set?--so instead of needing 1 2008 ASE W, you now need 2 of them--but one of them is 30% of the other--so start looking at these going up as the word gets out.

And, as a side note--why think that other 2008 Silver Eagle issues werent affected? There was no change in a reverse die for years--and then they changed it for bullion, Ws, and Proofs--so they guys on the line just switched the top die and left the bottom die in, until they had to replace the tbottom die--with the new dies. Expect to see a percentage of the Reverse of 2007 variety in every 2008 Silver Eagle issue that has been minted so far this year--thats my prediction.

I dont know where the value on these goes, but what would someone pay for FS examples of a bullion, a W and a proof in the variety format--obviously, the mint has the rest of the year to make more of the regular reverse issue, but its a done deal for the variety.

PCGS needs to make a statement on these quickly, because right now, NGC is getting all the press--

    Kaelasdad -

Agreed, even though I was lucky on a group of 100, doesnt mean they will always turn up in that number.

Who knows the die life for these W's?

I've heard from others who had newly purchased W's, and all were 08 reverses.

If this turns out to be a 50K or less variety, which is very possible, and by the way - it is very distinct and noticable - it's a $100 coin in any holder.

i think it is an very interesting find,

but a common one as far as rarity goes

...i'm just waiting for the remaining '07' XA1 sets to have '08 reverses...lol
