PCGS Spot review, is two months too long?

jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,065 ✭✭✭✭✭
I submitted a few 20th Anniversary ASE's from my personal collection to be reviewed because they had milk spots develop on them. I sent in a total of 14 coins out of 18 (6 complete sets) imageimage Of those, I sent in one PR70DCAM, two PR70 Reverse proofs, 5 PR69DCAM's, and 6 MS69's.

I also sent in 10 20th Anniversary ASE's that I purchased on eBay on the exact same day (on a separate submission form) because the seller lied to me and told me they were all flawless... He then said I had to work it out with PCGS and it wasn't his problem, so I did. I had purchased them because they were not sent in for regarding since PCGS had started grading MS70's and I was going to send them in to see if I could get some MS70's. I was planning on sending in all of my MS69's (my 6 plus the eBay 10 for a hopefull upgrade).

Well, that was on August 24th. The 10 2006-W ASE's I sent in were all downgraded to MS67 so I opted for the payout, and it only took PCGS 5 days to get back to me on those. I haven't heard anything from PCGS about the status of my other order, my 14 personal coins. What gives, why is there such a large time difference between the two? image

You should just call customer service... they're open for another 2 hours today... do it now!

I called them and they said it has to go through Presidential Review and go give it "a few more weeks". They said if I emailed the president of PCGS, he would not return my email. Those people have about $3500 worth of my coins, they could at least tell me what is going on with them!

I also have about $4500 worth of ASE's in for spot review. Mine have been there a month come this Thursday. In that I can see that they have the order on my submission status I don't worry about it. Some things take longer than others. I'm just thankful that they offer the guarantee that they do.
If you were a "flipper" or whatever I could understand the problem, but in my case I don't really care how long it takes them.... well, within reason.

On second thought HURRY UP !!!................. just kidding image
  • I asked them this about three months ago and I decided to send mine in. They told me it could take months to take care of. I asked why and she told me they are sent right to the top to have them look at them. So I guess they all travel through the desk of David Hall.

i have two shipments in now...one took 3 1/2 weeks b4 shipping a few days ago. the other is still there.

i called CS and said the usual is about 6-8 depending on what is happening. it was my understanding the David Hall does the review himself or with his management team.

edit...i had no contact from them so I am assuming the first orders were taken care of via replacement?...or will i contact them after I get the coins back?...not trying to go too far OT

Two months is too long. Very poor customer service.

  • I just got done with mine.

I had three sets of 20th anniv. first strike, all graded 69. They all developed milk spots, most on the ms and least on the reg. proof.

I opted for the buyout on the ms and rev pr. and pcgs fixed the regular proofs.

The offer was less than the market price, but I have no complaint.

Mine was submitted back in May. It sure took long time, maybe PCGS waited for the price to come down. It was highest back in May, June time period

  • I've got a Pres Review in at a couple days short of 4 months now. This is the first one I sent myself. I'll be using the dealer route in the future.

Is that going to speed things up? I was told by CS, that David Hall handles all spot reviews, and that it normally takes 1 month to 6 weeks....

LOL... if indeed David Hall does my spot review he'll be in for a surprise. One of my MS coins is in a PR slab and one of my Proofs is in an MS slab. Plus of course both have spots.

Going on 2.5 months and PCGS still can not give me any information on my coins image What in the H E double hockey stick are they doing over there? I can't imagine it taking more than 2 minutes to look at all 14 of my coins.

Ok, I'll chill for a while. I just never knew it could take so long and nobody at PCGS is giving me any information at all. I didn't know if they were lost or something... Thanks Russ

I once sent a coin in for Prez review. After a little over a month, I asked for my coin back. A couple weeks later, they returned the coin, unreviewed, and kept my $20. I will never send a coin back to PCGS for review again. As far as I am concerned, the grade guarantee is for the other guy. image

    jessewvu,

The interesting thing is that while I was waiting five months for NGC on that coin, I sent in another one that they took care of in two weeks. Same experiences with PCGS. Sometimes it seems to take forever, other times it's lickity-split. Both services are very inconsistent with turnaround times on grade guarantees, but both have always paid off.

I'm going on a month right now. Guess I'll just "set it and forget it"
  • LeeGLeeG Posts: 12,162
There has got to be a better way to get this done. I've been there so I know the pain. This really hurts the Grade Guarantee that's so widely touted as "the best". I told DH that someone should be fired over this kind of delay. I know in my Job I would have been if I was at fault in causing common delays of this nature. I'm a koolaid drinker, but this kind of thing really get's me fired up.

This is interesting since the US Mint doesn't have a guarantee covering their products that get certified!

  • 1. What is up with the milk spots on the eagles. Getting more common? 2. I sent 4 coins in on 10-18, recieved by me on 10-26. I sent 1 coin in on 10-19 and didn't get that back until today(11-8). I guess the PReview is a little different but with the release of the new SatinFinish they might have alot of work?? Still should have an answer for you though. good luck with that.

2 glaring things about your post: you're fine with the fact that they paid you under market value, and you're also fine with the fact that they may have waited for the price to come down? sounds like you let them hose you to me.
  • Well, the answer to the question is yes. Two months is too long. I guess
it's the norm though with the milkspot problem. Kinda sounds like PCGS
    is swamped.

I had 1 for each year up to 2004. Some spotted, like they were laid out and
someone brushed their teeth over them. Some spooted, like a white amoeba
    attack.

Why doesn't PCGS put a moratorium on slabbing them?
  • SteveSteve Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭
As an observer, I can really see why PCGS should stop giving out PR70 and MS70 grades. The more they give out, the lower the value and since nothing remains "perfect" forever, they create a liability they just shouldn't allow to happen. As I've said a million times, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY, folks.

yeah, thats just poor customer service
  • 57loaded57loaded Posts: 4,967 ✭✭✭
the premise is that you pay for the guarantee (everybody does) when coins are graded...

in some ways like an insurance policy that is open ended as to when it will "settle" and for how much.....when the coins were sent in? when they have been (finally) reviewed?

it is not good business practice to have "spot" reviews take so much time, regardless of the coin.

  • So they do not give you the price in their Price guide for your coins when you take the Buy Out option?
  • jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,065 ✭✭✭✭✭
I believe the buy out option was the price quide price at the time. My fear is now, since they have had my coins for almost three months, which price will they honor? The price of the coins when I submitted them or the price of the coins now? The last time I called, they told me there was "activity" in my order but the had no idea what that activity was.

No, they don't use the price guide. Never have. They use actual market values.

No. You misread what they said. They said that PCGS is tired of buying back these spotted coins, etc.
What it referred to was the $50k offer (that some people seem to think is a new thing but that HRH mentioned over a month ago anyway) to anyone who can find a cure.

I submitted a question for the Q&A section asking how long to expect to wait... but I think it got lost in transit because it was never posted...

Anyone know if things are speeding up lately on spot reviews?? I've had one in since December 27th and have had no word on status. I called customer service and they said "the spot review takes time". Sure, but how much exactly?(or approximately)

I've got several 20th Anni ASE's going in for spot review piggybacking with my normal submission. Preparing for the long wait.

My coins have been with PCGS since September. I called today actually and was told the same thing, and "maybe next week". You're looking at 3 months minimum I'd say.

Good luck! Mine took about 4 months. I didn't even get them back for Christmas image

    Submission #: 9075689
    Date Received: 8/24/2007
    Date Shipped: 12/26/2007
    Status: Shipped

I think all but 4 of my 14 coins downgraded. My only First Strike coin (graded originally as a MS68) held though. The MS68 coin has visible milk spots and three of my 69 coins have visible milk spots.. I don't know how they didn't downgrade.

I was told back in August that they try to fix the milk spotted coins, my coins were not taken out of their capsules because I got them back with the same certification numbers. I thought if they were taken out, they would get a new certification number...
