Picture of a Morgan Dollar (large image) - Guess the grade - Grade revealed

I have been experimenting with lighting and such.
I have set up a fixed system based on an flat bed stand equipped with a vertical screw height adjustable sturdy camera mount so that the camera points straight down and is stable.
lighting is through 2 150 W Osram (450 watt for old bulbs) Ott lamp type bulbs placed on each side pointing at the coin from a 45 degree angle with reflective rear mounted cone.
The camera is a Nikon D200.
The lens is a Nikon 60mm Macro (Micro) F2.8,
100 ASA,
Kodak gray card for manual white balance adjustment.

I think that the results are nice. What do you think? While you are at it try guessing the grade.

Not bad pictures for shooting through plastic, though I would rather see the pictures one on top of the other (I have a 17" monitor and still had to scroll right).

I'll go with MS64 due to the chatter and gob image

  • As requested by mrpaseo I have replaced the side by side picture with one that shows the two images vertically.
As far as the grade is concerned nobody has guessed yet.

Boy that is for sure. pretty coin, but the marks keep it a 63 I think. Great photo's, like Ricko said, almost too goodimage

this has that 6 look but I'm gonna go a solid 5 pl
  • As 2 members have guessed amd one has come close I don't think I should keep the suspense going any longer.

The enormous size (1800 pixels for each side) reveals much more than would be noticed just holding the holder in your hand.

Sure there is a bit of chatter and the luster is slightly smudged and there is a carbon mark above the ear. How many coins could be considered truly beautiful if examined at 5X or even worse 10x or 15x.

I think that the pictures show that the PCGS graders have done a good job with this coin as they also use a microscope to examine certain details.

  • Really pretty decent picture. It wasn`t until I got a digital camera when I realized how hard it is to get a good close-up picture.

    I`ll go with MS65.
