Why are there two lines for each coin? Is one line the First Strike? If so, which one? OR, are one of the lines for 20th Anniversary? Thanks! Ray

Thnaks Bear. So that means there are only 21 First Strike $25 Plats? That's not very many, yet they are king, how come?

Looks like the second line is for 1st Strike labels, which makes sense--as quite a few were graded before the deadline. Not many have graded afterwards, and how many still have their late orders on backorder? Funny thing is the harder label may be the non-FS, but you can always get yours relabeled if you wanted to get rid of the FS I suppose.

I doubt that the harder one will be the non-FS label. Don't forget that many haven't yet received their plats yet and also, many are still en route or in queue to be graded.

With over 700 graded by PCGS and whatever amount at the other grading companies, it looks like about half the 1 oz'ers have been graded.

And the other half hasn't shipped yet.

This is a great term, and so true in many cases with these plat buyers. I just hope most had the sense to sell off what was needed immediately to pay back their creditors.

whether these are in the hands of speculators, flippers, wannabe collectors, bad collectors, whatever you call them, you can not deny the fact that these coins are one of the lowest mintages minted by the U.S. Mint in the recent history. There may be very small platinum collectors but enough collectors to warrant the 2004 proof set to be over 3 times issue price in just two years. And with the U.S. Mint's plan to issue 10th anniversary platinum set this year, the popularity of these series will grow more than likely and once the real mintage numbers are published, the potential of these coins are unlimited or very good at least IMHO.

    classicoin,

I'd like to thank you for your informed opinion and concern; I'm a long time collector and former full time dealer who was involved in the silver rush of 1979 and 1980 and who remembers the $500 MS65 Classic Morgan Dollars, super high priced Classic Proof Type, and Classic Commems of 1989, ect...

I agree our hobby has a history of speculative bubbles that get very can ugly when they burst. But I do know that the history of coin market speculation is not limited to modern coins. I'm also pretty sure that most fields of collecting where there is a well defined after market experience these types of bubbles.

Edited to Add: I bought a fair number of the gold and plat 2006w's and I charged them on my credit card. I also paid the bill off as soon as it came in. I think that most of the people who ordered these in Nov/Dec and needed to sell them to pay bills have already done so(I'm glad they made some money). I think with the low mintages these coins will continue to do okay.

And by the way, I'm having alot of fun with these coins and all the activity and threads on the board, I don't care if the posters bought 1 1/10 oz on a credit card or 100 4pc sets for cash, I like to read what they have to say, this is fun. image

When you refer to the owners/buyers/and sellers of these coins generically as various grades of "newbs" your comments are at best adversarial. You're not interested in these coins. Move on.

Again though, he makes a very good point about the 'visa card flippers', and given that some of the participants in the threads (including some of the most active ones) have expressed financial hardships here on the board in the past, I think the concern for them is very valid. I really hope they've already paid off their balances when it comes to these. tyler267 also brings up a great point with the old "MS65 Morgan" market.

could it also be considered adversarial that a host of new members just joined at the exact same time as these new mint bullion products came out and they do nothing but start threads about the inane daily populations of these new coins and how much the current ebay price is on any given day.. maybe 99% of the members here could care less and consider that adversarial too.. sorry for the adversarial comments.. back to your flag holders now

You don't know squat on "how it is". You are like the plat owners. You are just SPECULATING!!!! So sorry you didn't get any and missed out on the windfall.

Lets not forget that it is just bullion. Bullion is an investment vehicle. The nice thing about bullion investment is that they are shaped like coins, they look like coins and they are monetized by the US government. It is a great match for a coin collector that also likes to invest.

No risk, no reward. These babies have handsomely rewarded the people that had the means and kahonies to ante up. Double your money in less than a month. Lets see the classic coins do that for you.

There are point to be made but you can tell from the post whether someone is trying to make an intelligent, well thought out post to look at both sides of the argument or start a war...I concluded it was the latter.

There is always room for caution, especially when there is a lot of posts that something is "going thru the roof". I have a lot of experience with this with stocks. I made and lost a fortune in the tech stock bubble.

As for these coins, we tend to overvalue our importance here on the forums. sure we talk them up, sure a lot of forum members bought and flipped them. But most of the purchases are coming from off of the boards--on ebay or in the established platinum collecter base (yes, there is one). The demand at this point seems to be real rather than speculation based.

I only ask that when you want to compare the Plats to a bubble, please give me a comparable mintage data for the 'other' bubble coin.

Other then that, you actually need some evidence and real data to have any credibility on this topic.

We know you won't find anything unless you go to the 2004 Proofs (which is too Modern for you) and which no one can find or go back to 1915. Thus, we can conclude that your posts are just your opinion, and like butts, everyone has one.

I am also going to look around and try to contact some assignment editors at the WSJ, Washington Post, Chicago Times, the LA Times, SF Chronicle, and the NYT and let a real reporter in on the Plat Story.

If anyone has a brother, sister, cousin, old friend working at one of these papers, please PM to see if they can help.

I have contacts at the LA Times that have covered many stories for me, I'll actually forward them a link to this thread. Furthermore, if you go ahead and write a press release, I'll hand deliver it to an editor at the LA Times to do with as he sees appropriate.

Each and every person has their own risk and tolerence level. For those people who thinks putting money in a fully insured bank checking account that earn 2% is risky, the platinums are not for them. Now for those daytraders, the platinums are not for them either, because their prices move too slow.image

Great post. A lot of posters seem to think these coins are held by "weak" hands who have to sell or creditors will be knocking or who will sell at the first sign of a dip causing the price to crash. Reality may be that there are a bunch of collectors who love these coins and are not looking to sell at any price, high or low.

Call me relieved, maybe even pleased, but not thrilled:

I felt these were the best of 12 sets. I also feel these grades were fair, but for maybe one of the $10 coins. Looks like the last one (or two) will be longtime keepers, as well as a full set in the raw.

You're getting quite defensive about this purchase, especially when I've never attacked the whole notion of buying platinum bullion, only expressed concern over others buying it on credit that can't afford to lose their investment.

(For the record, I bought 2 4 Coin Platinum Sets this year for my collection with no intention of flipping them)
