Is PCGS Still Doing Photography/Trueview? (And The Answer is-NO)
I heard that PCGS is not going to be doing any Photography any longer?
Has anyone else heard about this change?
A friend of mine was going to send some coins in for pics and was told they didn't offer this service anymore because it wasn't profitable.

I never thought it could be (independently) profitable, but I thought it might drive submissions. However, since PCGS is mostly getting bullion submitted these days, and they all look the same, there may not be as much need for photography service.
Say it isn't so!
<< <i>Even if they are losing money on the service, they'd be foolish to stop it. >>
I agree...plus I hope it's not true because I haven't sent any of my coins in yet to get them photographed.
I hope it's just some customer service person not knowing what's going on.
By the way he didn't talk to anyone over the phone but went to HQ to submit them and was informed there by an employee.
<< <i>It appears they removed it from the website! >>
Guess it's true
It would be nice if everything didn't have to be done for a profit, it was a nice service offered to the hobby and collectors
I agree and I nominate Elwood to take photos for us from now on.

"Not to be outdone by the recent blunders at ANACS, PCGS has announced that it is discontinuing it's popular TrueView service..."

Thanks Andy!! (I think Phil still has his job?)
Many businesses do things that don't affect the bottom line positively, as a service to their customers. Especially if it is a service that is good advertising and draws new and keeps old customers to their door. Retailers commonly sell products at a loss to draw people in.

Other than incredibly detailed, high resolution images, I primarily used the images to focus on diagnostics for Swiss specimen-strikes among other things. There is a great value in this....or was.
Edited to add: Double Dang! I'm too late! Both with the post and the submission!

I certainly hope not as I'm in that category of "driving submissions". Every submission, no matter what the service level, I paid for TV.
I even cracked coins that had little chance of crossing to make enough coins for a submission - just for the pics on a few.....and suffered may casulities.
This is truly disappionting news.

<< <i>I sure hope they don't discontinue this service. I am only about half done getting pics of the coins I want images of. And I can't afford to do everything at once. Guess I'll have to pick up the pace and get it done. >>
Same here. Very bad move by PCGS if it ever happens. If it does, we'll know where being a collector stands in the food chain at PCGS. Towards the bottom. Collectors want this service "Please Keep It"!
<< <i>That's extremely disappointing news. I just sent in a submission yesterday requesting the service and was planning on sending in a few more. >>
I bet if you send in more they will do them.
BUMMER!

<< <i>I cannot understand why once again we learn "news' about PCGS, not directly from PCGS, but from the boards here. Businesses should know that direct COMMUNICATION with their customers is the way to go. >>
Partially because what is heard here is sometimes not "news" but rather speculation based on circumstantial evidence.
<< <i>What a nice photo of that San Francisco $5 coin. Can you tell me more about it? Where did you get it? What type of coin is it? (Are there others like it?) >>
They are still available here at the US mint
Any new info? Hello?

<< <i>True View is indeed being discontinued as an available service.
<< <i>I have not used it for over a year, but I know a lot of forum members used it and am disappointed with the news.. The real shame is that now people will have partial sets photographed with TrueView, and as they complete their sets, their photography will not be unifrom. Mark Goodman is going to have to quit his day job.
Or, presumably, Darkhorse could do it on his own, unless PCGS moved him to the grading room!

Robert, surely you meant to say "Mark Feld" and not "Mark Goodman", right?
On a serious note, I wonder if the service was discontinued due to cost/profit considerations, time issues, both and/or "other"?
Box of 20
I am sorry to hear it is dicontinued. I was hoping over time to get my whole type set done. Now I have a few only.
