2001 Silver Unc Buffalo

Could someone tell me what the difference is between the Gloss finish and the Matte finish...I had no Idea there were two finishes...my thoughts are the finish on the die was wearing out causing the gloss finish.

  • They were offwered in two versions. One was proof with speciall polished planchets and frosted devises and the other version was uncirculated with the standard preimum business strike finsh.

I've handled a lot of these Buffalos... I've noticed slight differences in the finishes, but nothing that couldn't be attributed to die wear, and I certainly have not seen NGC ever put a finish type on their label.

The mint makes no differentiation with the finish on the Unc Buffalo dollar. However, there are visible differences in the finish between coins. Your description of gloss and matte are good adjectives for the differences I've seen. Using your words, the Buffalo in my set would be a gloss finish.
  • Ok, since there are or appear to be different finishes...in time will these differences divide them into types as in 1,2 and 3?

I have 3 sets...so if I do not have one or the other...does it mean I am missing one of the finishes and in time will it make a difference to my Silver Buffalo collection?

If a satin finish die is used too long the finish can fade and start taking on a smooth glossy appearance. So you probbly hav a coin struck from a die that needed its satin/matte finish restored.
  • It has been reported , but not documented, that the finish on the Buffalo Coin and Currency sets are different from the Uncirculated coins sold separately.

I will investigate that since I have quite a few raw Buffalo C&C sets as well as the raw mint state pieces still in their original holders.
