1913 Liberty nickel for sale on eBay-Starting bid $15,000-Seems about right

Yesterday, a new eBay seller posted a pic of a 1913 lib nickel, quoting a starting price of $15,000. I have written the seller, no response as of yet.

The pic looks pretty good. May even be one of the known 5 specimens.

Has anyone here ever seen one in this type of condition, for sale, where it is not slabbed, and later confirmed that it is not authentic?

Edit: 4 bids, highest $150,000, reserve met , now $300,000 , $1,000,100, and where it will stop, no one knows

I think that the lowest grade one is the McDermitt piece, which was sort of a PR-60. It has somewhat rough surfaces and really is not all that attractive.

None of the 1913 nickels show signs of circulaiton.

Oh, it's real, all right -- to the extent that a clandestine, not-authorized coin can be real.

The McDermitt coin was graded PF55 by NGC. The coin in the Ebay auction is the Eliasberg coin. Maybe Laura has a new ebay name.

The high bidder (jan9101) also bid on a Legend (flowinghair) coin. Legend has a 1913 Nickel, right? Here's the feedback left:

You know what would be really sweet wih this auction. If someone in the Salt Lake area could win it and then go out to his address to pick it up in person. . . .taking along a couple of Salt Lake City police officers for security of course. Then when he has to admit that he doesn't have the coin they can go ahead and arrest him for fraud right there.

gee if the seller is "clever" enough to pull a "questionable" transaction like this, what makes you think that is a real address; it might be a pob or a mail drop off addy;

You have to admit that the seller is very clever. He listed a 1996 Kobe Bryant card for $26 to show that he sells other items besides extremely rare coins. That's what really fooled me. I almost bid on his 1913! Bidding ended at $99,000,000, which is $240 more that I was willing to go.

Can't wait to read about this one in the news! My guess is that this is a 13 year old juvenile delinquent.

Fortunately, the reserve was met; I was afraid this seller was gonna get greedy.

I'm sure Compucheap is breathing easier; I know for a fact that he has less than $99,000,000 to his name and he wouldn't spend it all on one coin.

This one is only at $4,150,000. The last one went for $99 million. Looks like the bottom has dropped out of the market. The bidder on the first one should have listened to Laura's warning about not buying widgets at auction.
