Have you ever considered...

... going Darkside and collecting World coins in addition to your US coins?

If you already do then what lured you to include Darkside material in your collection?

If you are a pure litesider still but have thought it might be nice to collect foreign coins in addition to your liteside sets, then what particular aspects of Darkside coinage attract you?

If you are a pure litesider and intend to stay that way, then what are your reasons for doing so? Enough with the sets you are doing? Darkside seems daunting? Worried you don't know enough or are worried you'll not be able to learn what is required?

And finally has anyone taken the plunge and converted to complete Darkness and quit actively collecting US coins?

I occasionally wander to the darkside - for Roman coins. The history is like a magmet that draws me there; but my primary passion is still with US coins.

I wish I could find the darkside more interesting and compelling to me personally. But I don't. I dabble a bit from time to time, particularly ancients, but that's about it.

Ah Jim... yes we got you good and proper! image I remember it well you were fighting off a front attack from the Darkside infantry that were bombarding you with gothic florins and sixpences, but whilst you were occupied there the cavalry nipped in from the side with a City View Thaler...

As GD said... "Another one bites the dust!", ah i love the smell of converted litesiders in a morning.

Although it works both ways. I'm hedging closer and closer to finally buying a Bust Dime. image

Don't listen to him!! The darkside is EVIL!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Buying 19th century gold at a couple bucks over spot is what lured me to the darkside image

While my passion is in the US coins/currency area, I do collect coins and currency from countries that I have traveled to (occasionally friends bring me some leftovers too).

I will also add Roman and Greek ancients to my collection specifically because it makes learning history of those times/places so much more interesting.

Yes, <sigh>, and I am edging ever closer to stumbling again.image

As for bust dimes, just remember, a date set only contains 20 coins...looks great...lots of fun...image

  • I collect US silver type almost exclusively, but I did feel the need to pick up a few PCGS certified Silver Brittania's for my type set because I absolutely love the designs... (not the queen side, the reverseimage )
  • I've just made the jump.........completely. I am liquidating my US coins and am working on a "complete" set of Irish coins. I see a huge depression coming to the US market. Just my feeling. I am having a great friggin' time with my new passion. Oh, and it isn't easy, especially slabbed material. I'll have to send alot of pieces out to NGC (sorry PCGS, they're cheaper, so, more $ for coins).
Everything I write is my opinion.

    Looking for alot of crap.
  • Yes, I collect darkside...I lived overseas for a number of years not to mention the lure of history attached to the coins.

  • I looked for a bst board for Darkside coins recently, trying to find a toned Irish florin for sale. Are Darkside coins listed on the regular bst board?

That's a good question pharmer. I'd imagine so. Sometimes people list things in the World Coin forum and no one crawls up their a$$ like they would in the US forum. If you find another spot, let me know.

Yes Darkside is listed on the BST regularly but there isn't as much available so you have to search for it. The world/ancient coin forum here has a BST thread every weekend that you might want to check out.
  • Thanks, I'll check it out this weekend. The more Darkside coins I see, the better I like em. Some great designs.

  • Seems like this thread was designed with me in mind image

While I'll still contribute to the clutter around the US Coin Forum, I've begun the switch. I don't think I'll be selling off any of (what's left) of my US collection, nor will I quit US altogether. I've just gotten tired of the amount of junk coin in the US market I have to wait (or is that wade?) through to get to a purchase. Seems like more time spent picken' 'em than collectin' 'em. So... off to the Darkside I've gone...

I haven't bought an American coin in about 5 years; I think the last was an 1860-O dime. I still like Liteside coins, but there's so much more value, variety and history on the Darkside.

My first foray into world coins was in 1976 when I saw there were lots of silver
coins in dealer junk buckets for 25 or 50c each. It took a while to learn which series
were silver and which weren't but it was an inexpensive way to purchase silver.

It wasn't long before I noticed there were lots of the "common" cu-ni coins which
were never seen or seen only in low grade so I started watching for these also.
It's still possible to get old silver and gold coins for very little cost so these weren't
    far behind.

World coins are surprisingly easy to learn about because there tend to be far
more similarities than differences. Ancients, Oriental, and mid eastern are more
difficult but even these are doable with some effort and the proper references.

Have you ever considered going Darkside?
  • While primarily a US collector--I have a passion for Mexican, central and south American silver coinage 1700-1900. And then, of course, there are my early Greek obols, Drachms and tetradrachms--and let's not forget coins of the Roman Republic period. I'm also always lured by early British and German coins--some very fine examples of what coins should look like. Guess my answer is "Yes!" For me the single US series that shows classical (Grecian) influence is the Peace dollar.

Yeah! Conder!! So many people forget that we used these coins until what--1857? The Pillar dollar (which I am still looking for) is the very first coin in the RedBook. People forget the legacy that coinage from other countries have provided for ours--unfortunately much of our coinage is mundane and lacks artistic merit. (That said, many exceptions come to mind--St. Gaudens SLQs, Mercs, Walkers and early Federal)If you really want to see coins as art--look at early Greek coins--marvelous relief and beautiful designs--as I said earlier I think the 1921 Peace dollar comes closest to replicating the Greek tradition of coins as art.

  • My point was that there are some 30 to 40 "American" countries, all but one of which are Darkside. So switching to the Darkside can easily still be "pro-American". image

I buy Canadian coins. You can still get some low mintage coins for a good price.

A good example are the Candian pennies from 1921 to 1927 - low mintages but still afordable.
