New Barber Purchases
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Perhaps, a few more slabs this time around to allow more posters to participate since three states (plus Florida) have been affected.
Possibly three states in three separate slabs (it would be nice to see them in one slab).
Or do we stick just with LA and MS and slight AL?
You and the other guys have been great in thinking this through in the past!

It's for a great cause and might even be a fun "investment" otherwise.

That is great. Now PCGS can help "nudge" us coin collectors in adding another $90,000 to the $10,000 to make it a total of $100,000!
It is possible.
On the surface, this sounds like a great idea. It is a win-win situation, without doubt.
However, the magnitude of the disaster and the needs it has brought are overwhealming and immediate. The various charitable organizations need as much money as can be raised, now. Every dollar that is delayed, may well be multiple lives lost. I believe the money that would go towards the slabs would be better utlized by going directly to our preferred charities.
The greater good, in this case IMHO, will be served by our immediate donations to organizations where the maximum benefit will go to those with the greatest need. While I, also, would love a special slabbed coin, I would rather not have it and have the full amount go to the relief efforts.
Please don't shoot the messenger. Everyone's heart is in the right place. Forgoing the special slabs and directly putting all the dollars towards our respective charities will provide the maximum benefit for those who need it the most.
<< <i>Oh boy, and with respect... I have to take an opposing view of this.

Count me in, I'd like to help.
FIRST STEP IS FOR ME TO LOCATE (200) RAW COINS OF EACH OF THESE STATES FOR PCGS TO USE FOR THE SLABBING OF THESE (600) COINS. IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ANY ROLLS OF THESE STATE QUARTERS THEY WOULD LIKE TO DONATE TO THIS CAUSE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
ALSO, THIS WILL BE A MASSIVE PROJECT - THE AUCTION/ SALE OF THESE (600) COINS. OREVILLE - WOULD YOU BE AVAILABLE TO ACT AS TREASURER FOR THE PROJECT? REGISTRYCOIN - ARE YOU AVAILABLE TO ACT AS SECRETARY? WOULD ANYONE ELSE HERE ON THE BOARDS BE AVAILABLE TO ASSIST WITH SOME OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS ASSOCIATED WITH RUNNING THIS PROJECT? COSMICDEBRIS - ARE YOU AVAILABLE AGAIN? I WOULD THINK WE WOULD WANT A TEAM OF ROUGHLY A HANDFUL OF BOARD MEMBERS TO OVERSEE THE PROJECT - PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.
HOPEFULLY, WE CAN RAISE A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY FOR A NUMBER OF CHARITIES IN THESE (3) STATES.

absolutely. no middleman. $ should go direct. Who cares about the coins. coins = time. Just send some/any $ to the proper organizations that are reputable and not some middleman or someone pressuring on the telephone. My humble opinion (and that of the Red Cross I think).

Before I commit, need to know how much money actually goes to disaster relief and how much goes to the promoters. Sorry, just naturally skeptical.
Maybe a straight up cash donation to the Red Cross would be more efficient.
Thanks,

I live in New Orleans. Well, just outside in Metairie. Me and my family currently in Texas with relatives. I have only one of my cars, six sets of clothes, my photo albums, my insurance papers, and my coin collection. I am very lucky, everyone I know is accounted for and at least alive. My house looks like it may have only gotten a little water compared to most of what I have seen. I have bought a new computer to try and get my business back up, and just stopped by here to let someone who I bought a gold dollars from know do to mail it. I have rolls of state quarter from each of these states and would be willing to send them to you. Just PM me with the info. I have to be honest it may be a few days to a week or so before I could actually mail them but, you can count me in.
I was doing great for several days after the storm, in good spirits and all. Then I purchase the computer and started taking care of business. I had six auctions on ebay that ended Sunday night. I contacted the winners and told them it would be a while before I could ship and please be patient with me. One of the winners, who had already paid for the item with paypal, sent me back a message saying. "Don't worry about the coins, I don't care if I ever get them or a refund. Just keep the money and take care of your family."
Well, I lost it. I was crying like a baby.
The kindness that has been shown to me in the past few days is unbelievable. I have always considered myself to be blessed. I was always one to give to whatever cause when asked. I have helped lots of mission projects at church and other places. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would need any help. People have be bring clothes to my sisters house for us, and toys for our daughter. One lady brought a new pair of shoes for each of us. The list goes on.
Despite all the bad things happening in New Orleans right now. There are still good people in the world willing to help with out a thought for themselves. I like this plan. I thank everyone who is willing to help in whatever way they can/want. If someone does not like this plan, to them I say come up with your own or help in someother way.
Thanks to all, and let me know where to send my coins.

Yeah you're right but why is that? Maybe cause they can't?
Excuse me but the situation in the disaster area is overwealming. Those people need help now and they need it in the form of Food, water, medicine and personal items.
If anyone truely cares about this situation get on the Red Cross website and send some money. If you're just interested in seeing another PCGS slab variety that you can buy in bulk and hope to sell for a profit in the future - well that's another matter entirely.
This stuff about profiting off the Katrina disaster with new slab varieties turns my stomach even worst than the looting, rapes, and robbery that's going on down there.
Excuse me for saying this but Numismatics doesn't need to be viewed as a bunch of opportunists that profit from the misery of others.
I intend to donate as much as I can. Hope others here consider doing the same.
Just to clear up something here - I am only willing to participate in such an endeavor (as is Miles at PCGS), if but, only if 100% of the proceeds of the sale of these coins go to the specified charities (repeat 100% of the sales proceeds) . So, how do I ensure this happens? Easy - everyone buying a coin will make their check payable directly to the charity. Just like in 2001 with the Friefighters where the Widows and Orphan Fund cashed all of the board members checks - not me, not Oreville, not PCGS. Finally, this fundraiser does not supercede anyone's ability or desire to donate money now to their favorite charity. But, I suspect, there will also be charities in great need of donations a month or two from now as well. When Miles gets back from Colorado next week, he told me he would announce which charities the 100% proceeds of these sales will be directed to. Miles selected the Firefighters in 2001 and I am confident his selctions this time will be equally acceptable to the board members

This is a good point regarding matching gifts. Make sure you check with your employer and see if they match. I just donated some money to the Red Cross, and my employer is matching everything dollar for dollar (they also made a $1MM donation yesterday and are sending medical equipment as well).

Again, and with all of the respect I can offer everyone here, a "straight up" cash donation to the charity of each person's choice is obviously the most efficient way of approaching this. The folks living through this need every cent that can go to charity. Even the (smaill) amounts that would be used to cover expenses in terms of the slabs may well be the difference in some people living and dying. As much as a special slab is attractive (once again, I would love one myself), this is a case where as much of the monies involved really need to get to those in need and right now, IMHO.
I'll donate the coins.

Perry,
This is why I have tried to take a very high road in terms of rising in opposition to the slab idea. It's too easy to let emotions well up on this topic.
The most generous, without question, act is a straight donation to the charity of one's choice. At the same time, the important thing is that funds are raised. I understand. from Orville, that almost 100 percent of the monies raised will be, ultimately donated. However, even that small amount could be, IMHO, put to use. Even if the costs are 1 percent, that would feed a couple of kids or provide bottled water for many. The money that the slabs cost (whatever PCGS' donated costs are) as well as the donated Ebay fees could (I think) be better utilized if these two fine companies just gave the cash rather than in-kind contributions. None of this even addresses the time delay in getting the money to the appropriate charities.
The slab idea is a very kind one and I commend Orville for his efforts. The same for anyone who will participate. IMHO, and with every (and I mean EVERY) ounce of respect I can offer...it would be best if everyone just took the exact amounts they would put towards it and make an online donation. What the slabs really are is a relatively inexpensive premium to foster additional contributions. That great but only if they will be the motivation behind someone making a donation. Nothing wrong with that. Heck, I've made a few charitable contributions myself when a group has included a few mailing labels in their request. However, this time and these circumstances are very unique and different. I'd love some of these but every penny is needed now to save lives. Every second of delay are more lives lost.
Again, just one guy's opinion and with as much respect for everyone as I can express.

not me. instead, i am simply making a contribution to the red cross.
i see no need to commercialize this catastrophe.

But yes, I do see nothing wrong with coin collectors wanting to create a lasting and tangible token of the time they banded together and contributed monies in times of need as a team.
I must point out that since the 9-11 crisis generated $40,000 in donations for the Firefighters, those "slabs" have continued to raise even more charitable monies for more organizations and will continue to do so. One of those 9-11 slabs raised over $500 for charity for one auction alone. 100% of the monies went to that charity!
I have made a vow that any 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina slab that I "purchase" will only be sold someday ONLY to raise more monies for truly worthy charities! That is the "magic" of these slabs.
But surely, it is not for everyone! I was even skeptical the first time, myself.
This is just one more way to get me to stretch a little further. I also like the nature of competitive bidding. I'll bet that also gets people to stretch further. It's not a matter of giving now instead of giving later... it's a matter of doing both.

My understanding is that exactly 100% of all funds for the "purchase" of the slabs will go to the disaster relief. Maybe we can get lucky and go for 101%!
I would love to see PCGS display all of these slabs at the Baltimore and FUN (possibly even Long Beach) show before they are dispersed to the various collectors.

Sorry to hear about your electrons.
But you said it right. This is all incremental efforts. Can you imagine us coin collectors doing a coin concert instead?
Oreville: You are correct - if memory serves me right, to ensure that every cent of the funds raised in the sale of the Firefighter coins went to the charity, we did not even allow any shipping costs to be included with the sales price of the charitable coins. Collectors made their checks payable directly to the charity in the exact amount of the cost of the coin (which the charity then cashed directly) and any cost of shipping was also paid for by the purchaser of the coin himself, usually by including $3-$5 cash along with the check made payable to the charity to cover whatever shipping method the purchaser preferred. Congrats on becoming Treasurer to this neat project you envisioned.
