How long can i still "stop payment" a check?

  Better call the bank asap. Once it's paid out I don't know what they can or will do for ya.

  Maybe he held it for 21 days, it cleared and shipped it out on the 25th day. Thats only 10 days in the mail and I would contact him first and see when he mailed the coin. You might have it in the mailbox in the next few days!

  Check with your bank and find out when it cleared. I'd bet it was a lot quicker than 21 days.

  You can do a stop check so long as the check is not cashed or has cleared if the seller deposited it. If it's already cleared/cashed, go to or call your local branch and they will take care of it there.

  You can only stop a check from clearing your bank and then the stop order is
  good for only, I think, one year. If the check reaches your bank then they won't
  pay it from your account and will send it back to where it started. They will
  probably be able to debit an accound for it but if not then they are out the money.
  They'll do what they can to charge the person who cashed the check.
  
  Stop payment is rarely used anymore because of the expense. Don't tell some-
  one you will stop payment since they might hold the check until the order ex-
  pires.
  
  You can stop payment only until it clears your bank which it most probably has.

  Personal check outside the U.S. is usually a bad idea, especially if you don't know the seller. Next time wire the cash to an escrow service -- your funds won't be released until you have the item in-hand; always the smart thing to do for significant purchases.
  
  
  Edited to add: any major bank should be able to link you up with this service, but if you're making a smaller purchase, say four figures, you'd be just fine with Ebay-recommended Escrow.com.
  
  I don't understand why more forum members don't do this on $1K+ purchases they have questions about. Escrow could have short-circuited that full-step nickel fraud and the other disasters we read about. If a seller is unwilling to use escrow, that is a huge red flag which should result in immediate transaction termination.

  if the check has not been paid out at your bank you can put a stop payment on it go to your bank and request a stop patment they see if it has been paid
  if not
  you pay like 15/20/more? dollars or so and then it will not be paid out
  
  if it has alreasy been paid you are %$#@ out of luck

  Personal checks are problematic for both sides of the border. Both the US and Canadian post offices sell pink international money orders, and in fact the Canadians can buy them in US dollars. These can be cashed at the post office. Besides using PayPal, it is the easiest way to deal with Candians.
