What's the most expensive coin you ever held in your hot little hand?

ms70ms70 Posts: 13,956 ✭✭✭✭✭

For me it was a Half Cent from the 1790's. (I forget the exact date & grade). It was at last year's
ANA in Baltimore and was in a PCGS slab.

$90 Grand!

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

    Cameron- I assume you're talking about a 1913 Liberty?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Yes. One of the ANA coins.

I've held a couple of Godzillas in my hands, both several years ago:

the 1793 Wreath Cent Vine & Bars MS69BN PCGS
one of the 1893-S Morgan dollar MS67 PCGS
    When in doubt, don't.

Great question! I've seen alot, but haven't held much of anything. Maybe a 1933 Eagle, MS65, about 250k.

Wait, I just remembered, back in 88 or 89 Hugh Sconyers had just bought the Dexter 1804 Dollar for about 1mm or so for the Wall Street Rare Coin fund he was running. It was in a large capital plastics holder. Probably worth 2mm today.

The two most expensive coins I've actually held (although they were all (PCGS) slabbed at the time) were (1) the King of Siam Set, which includes an 1804 dollar and (2) a 1913 V-nickel.

I held the King of Siam set in my hands at Superior in 1990 or so the day before it sold for $3,190,000 (including the juice). In about 1997 or so I held the PR64 '13 V-nickel a few weeks after it sold for $990,000 (including the juice).

  • While not a coin, I held a Kilo of Platinum on a trip to Toronto. Worth I guess about $20,000 Canadian ( about $15,000 US ). Went to a coin shop that sold bullion and they had a big shipment of silver, gold and platinum brought in a few minutes after I walked in . There was a few statements that the owner had to sign as proof of the shipment was delivered. On one statement I saw, it was $32,000. Another was for $46,000. If I where to guess, the shipment was probably in the neighborhood of a $100,000 worth of silver, gold, and platinum Canadian bullion. It was a stroke of luck that I was there to see it. I`ve never been around that much " raw " money at one time!imageimage It was certianly one of the highlights of a very wonderful trip in Toronto!imageimageimageimage
  • I held a $30k gold coin (in PCGS slab) at my local dealer. I know nothing about gold coins, so I couldn't even tell you the series, but it was an interesting experience. Next time I won't drop it image

I'm in the minor leagues. About the best I have held is a 37D 3-legged buff in 64. I have held a check for $3 million, though.

The most expensive coin I remember holding was a 1794 $1 in PCGS F-12. That was truly a thrilling coin to hold. I also held some very high grade proof seated dollars and trade dollars.

I once held a 1963 Proof Lincoln. It was nicer looking than a coin I know of worth $35K, so it must be worth more...

I held one of the three in 66, with a 65, too imageimage Too bad my dealer sold the two for $35k, considering the 66 just sold for $76k...

Oh, and those were the first two slabs I ever held image

Oh, again--I guess my raw coin wins right now at around $1 million+ image

I didn't hold it, but I was 6 inches away from it (in a case) 2 weeks ago. It's currently on display at the ANS museum at the Fed in NYC.

  • The best I've done is Rick Kay's Rotated Reverse Copper Planchet Shield Nick pattern, and a Morgan Copper Dime Pattern, after that, would be the Moster Rainbow that Jason found for Rick that was worth $500... pretty big amount just right there for me... most valuable coin in my whole collection is only about $65-$70

Last week at FUN, I held the 1870-CC $20 from the Heritage auction, the 54-O $20, and the Bass 54-S $2.50. I think that's about $700,000 or so between the three.

I suspect that J-1776 would top the 1933 $20 if it ever came up for auction.

Edited to say: for me, either the Eliasberg 1913 nickel or the Amon Carter 1794 dollar - pretty much a tossup.

The Brasher Dabloon...the one with the X mark on the front breast....it was in an XF45 PCGS holder. Either that or the 1933 $10 Eagle I saw at auction some years ago.

Two. One was a PCGS PR68DCAM 1895 Morgan proof at last summer's Baltimore show. What a headlight black-n-white marvel. Sold for $130 K I believe.

The other was the 1974 aluminum penny, which was sold for....well I don't know but I can image it was huge.

Gold proof set from 1800's, actually a couple of different ones, priced in the seven figures. Very rare, very amazing.

I've held a 1792 half dime struck in copper. It was on display and the owner came up to take it out.

The other cool one was a 1917 Proof Walker. OK, I know they don't exhist in the pop reports. It was in an ANACS holder as a specimen strike. It had the matte proof surface, squared off rims, partial wire rim, and a 100% complete strike. It was a very interesting coin.

Thanks to a good friend who was cataloging lots for a Goldberg's auction, I had the opportunity to study up close and personal the unique 1870-S half dime at a FUN Show a couple of years ago, when they had it on consignment. With armed guards at either side, I was able to study it to determine the specific die marriage, and confirm that the reverse die was the same as used on the 1871-S half dime. Despite the insert in the slab, I agreed with the original grading, from when it was first discovered - AU-55 - and not the MS-63 inflation grade it now sports. Nice coin though.

This one at the ANR Koshkarian sale last year.
PCGS 66 realized 966,000.00 with juice.
I couldn't begin to bid on it, but they let me look at it.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • I think I may win. I very delicately held the 1849 $20. Arguably to me, if the Smithsonian sold it, I think it would be #1. Also the Type II 1804, 1933 $20 and the Gold Half Unions.

You don't win image Because I held the 2 1933s, the 3 1804s, the ultra high relief, and the 1849 $20 at the same time... I even got to remove them from the two rarities cases image I win! image
