Merry Christmas to ME! An Olympus C-5050!

I finally did it and bought myself a really nice digital camera. I picked up an Olympus C-5050 today. Batteries are still charging, so no pics yet, but tomorrow I'm going to have some fun!

Anyone use one and have some advice to cut the learning curve a bit. This camera is REALLY complicated, or so it seems!

Michael

  • Great camera! As for hints on getting up to speed fast, as far as I know, there is no way other than to RTFM. My Nikon CoolPix 3100 is great for coins but it took me a while to get "fast" with it (i.e. changing settings, toggling from menu to menu, etc.) Once I had the basics down, the finer points (exposure, white balance, etc.) came pretty easily.

Good luck and please post some beauties!!

Add: Did you get an AC converter? For me it's a must since batteries go fast, especially with high resolution. Also, I bought a card reader to speed download times and save on battery life. The guy I bought the camera from recommended it and am I ever glad he did!! Far, far faster than downloading from the camera.

Coppernicus -- I did get the card reader for the same reasons you mentioned. But I do need an AC convertor. I'm not even sure it has one. I have to look @ Olympus's website and see. Thanks for the advice.

GQ - I defintely will. Hopefully I can learn to take some nice pics and start posting my favorites. The Coolpik does take better macro, but I like the versatility of the Olympus though and it has a larger screen.

It will have an AC adaptor accesory and you definately want it. I burned through batteries mercilessly before finally wising up to spending a few bucks and just plugging it in!

Micheal great camera you got there I have to wait another 11 days for my C5050. I just sold my C3000 so I am cameraless until Christmas day.image

The C5050 should not be mechanically much different than the C3000. A few tips play with the white balance and the lighting settings. Don't be afraid to experiment with the settings too.

I want to see how it does also. I have a Olympus 2020 and the macro sucks! Does it use smartcards???
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    Michael,

I bought an Olympus C-740 a few months ago, and was surprised that it didn't come with an AC adaptor. I got one of those, plus the card reader, and highly recommend both.

All of the possible settings were a bit intimidating at first, so it took a lot of trial and error to find the best combination of setting to take good pictures. Good lighting is crucial, and I prefer natural light (sunlight, but not directly on the coin). If you find the settings that work best for you, your camera may have a way to save those them so you don't have to reset them every time you take pictures.

Good luck. We're looking forward to seeing the results of your efforts.

A couple easy things. White balance is important, use it. To get sharper shots put the camera closer instead of using zoom. Use as little zoom as you can get away with. Lighting is tough and takes practice and experimentation. Take lots of photos. For mine, especially with slabs you'll find subtle differences in sharpness picture to picture with the same set up, allows you to pick the best.

  • I bought the C-5050 in a package deal. Different lenses, filters and accesories. It arrived Tuesday. Still learning all the buttons. It is an awesome camera. I have an AC adaptor from a previous Olympus but the Ni-MH batteries do really well in it.

I happened by Fry's and found a 256 meg compact flash card for $51 out the door. The sale is good until the 16th, I believe.

256 MB and above is the only way to go for 5 Mpixel cameras. Get about 100 pics on the card. Can shoot a lot without emptying.

  • Michael, would you tell me what you paid for the C5050? I've been looking for another camera. I'm not really happy with my Ricoh. For taking macro's of coins it's ok, but not very good for others photo's. Of course it could be me. Thanks
