Scanning note

I'm sure this is old news for most of you, but I just recently started scanning in pictures of my coins. Thanks to mbbiker for getting me started doing this (he wanted to see scans of some of my coins). It's really great to see these coins in such detail -- in many cases I saw details I hadn't seen before. It was like looking at these coins in a whole different way.

Anyway, just today I finished scanning in my "nicer" coins (still have about 40-50 lower grade coins to go). I know the scans aren't quite as nice as pictures, and the copper ones particularly came out darker than they really are, but I'm not set up for pictures and it's much easier to just scan them. It was definitely worth the effort for anyone that hasn't done this yet...

  • Scanning coin is fun since it gives you time to look at your collection. You have any examples to share with us? Here is what it looks like when I scan my coins:

  • That one really came in nice. Here's a few that I've posted in various other threads for opinions:

    1865 3 cent
    1928 $20
    1912-D nickel

Here's an example of a copper one that I just scanned in today. It's a brown coin, but it scanned in a lot worse than it actually is. The bottom of the obverse is almost black -- looks like a shadow from the slab it's in.

  • One trick I've just discovered when scanning (slabbed) toned coins is to use two slabs and lean the one being scanned on top of the other slab, almost looks like a flat "T" This elevates the top of the slab about .25" and seems to help bring out the colors.

Those look good. Have you tried the prop it on a pencil trick?
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Thanks for the tip on the slabbed coins -- I'll give that a try!
