I'm guessing you figure it is a matte proof given the title and date of the coin. The images don't allow me to see any diagnostics for proof status, but that doesn't mean they might not be there. It has been my experience that 1914 matte proofs are very granular, which does not exactly match what I interpret from the images.

Rims look good and detail looks good. Let us know if any diagnostics are evident when you get it in hand.

I hope he gave you pix of the entire coin. I don't trust those that crop out portions. Makes me suspicious of the rims.

It might very well be a proof. I hope so.

Looks like it might have some carbon spotting.

Looks very nice. Congrats! Show us pix when it arrives.

Lance I agree with you, The cropped portions make this one questionable. It the original auction photo the diagnostic on the date is there for sure. I had a resident MPL collector here take a look at the auction after I won. He agreed with me. Worth a gamble for the price I paid. Also someone else thought it was an MPL too. That is why the bidding went over $200

Hmmm well we wont know how you did untill you post some better pics. It could be an MPL but like Lance I'm worried about the rims. If you look at around the date area the rim looks to have a rough spot; hope it turns out good for you.

I would vote in favor of the coin being an MPL. The coin appears to have some knife edge like this MPL.

Well, I hope you did score. I saw the coin, but the seller said nothing about it being a MPL. The problem with 1914's in general, is that they can be hammered like this one. I hate to look stupid after Brian has spoken, but I do not think its an MPL because the left rims are not full enough IMHO, But I hope I am wrong.

WS, I think that is just the angle of the photo when it was taken. Still a bit worried that the rims are not right but we will see. I don't believe the seller knew it was an MPL and he would have listed it as such had he known. I have talked to a lot of older collectors who said that know they probably had a few MPL's in their collections but just thought that they were really well struck buisness strikes.

I hope it turns out to be a MPL. You could have gotten a slabbed one for a few more bucks this weekend at Heritage. tHEY HAD 20 OF THEM THAT DID POORLY AT action in the 60 to 63 grade range. They had a few cleaned ones that did even worse. The MPL fad is over.

Tdec, you should realize that on this forum many people here will almost as a 'reflex action' nay say anything any given poster writes. They will take any opportunity to pour a glass of cold water on someones head. Whether they know the series, understand the diagnostics, or have ever owned a particular coin.....they can become an 'expert' just by saying NO NO NO NO NO NO.

And when that fails, they will tell you your whole coin series is garbage.

Its just human nature, since they cannot fix their own car or talk back to their wife any longer.

    Its just human nature.

Such are the risks of posting ANYTHING on this forum....you will get these reactions from a few people in the peanut gallery.

Regardless, the key diagnostic on a 1914 Matte Proof Lincoln is that small die chip that comes upward from the right side of the top of the first 1 in 1914.

......and that key diagnostic is on your new coin. (period)

And as they naysay this...and they patiently wait for the sun to rise in the west....you cherrypicked a great piece at a fraction of its value. Now...you need to get that sucker in hand and then whisk it off to PCGS for slabbing. Then......those who disbelieve will pivot their heads from the west...waiting for the sun to rise....and acknowledge you have a 14 mattie.

From the photos it looks like a lock MPL.

And I bought over half the MPL's in Heritage. image

PM me with the photos when you get it and we'll compare it to the diagnostics in Albrechts pamphlet and Flynns book.

There were only 2, possibly 3 posters in this thread who didn't speak in a positive vein at the chances of this being a matte. Hardly a den of carnivores here.

The thing that bothers me is the carbon spot or dirt can't tell what it is just yet at the 12:00 rim obverse. I will have to look at it a bit better when I get home.
