dino lite imaging

I have a few questions about this. I'm focusing on the AM211 and/or 311S. I know many of you(us) use them. Can the AM211 or 311S fit say a Morgan Dollar on an image for an eBay listing? Is a stand needed and available? Is there any real reason why to take aim at the AM313, AM311ST or AM411ST? My primary concern is imaging for listings, I totally suck at photography and I'm a cheapo, well more of a brokeo; but I collect coins, so therefore I'll never go poor.

I will usually use a camera to photograph the total coin. I will then use my Dinolite to catch certain areas of the coin such as detail or doubled dies. My Dinolite is an AM-311ST. You can use the stand to photograph the whole coin, but do it with other lighting than the LCD provided on the Dinolite.............Rick

Edited to say that the pix you take with Dinolite are fine for listing on EBAY....

  • I bought a dino-lite that came with a flex stand. I find the stand is alittle to short to get full slab pics. But if you put the stand on a thick book.or small box you can get the hight you need. The closeups are easy and good quality pics. I have had a lot of trouble with glair that I haven't been able to get rid of.

  • Don't be too cheap! image Buy one with at least the 1.3 M pex and a good copy stand.

below is a quick picture of my messy desk with what the 413T will do with the copy stand my son got me fro Xmass.

PS: Still playing with the set up, but for a quick picture .... well what do you think? image

But can you get a pic of the whole slab?

The copy stand looks shorter than the stand that came with my Dino lite. And I found I needed more hight to get a full slab pic.

I can't seem to get true to life color with the dinolite. in particular, on gold.

Yes, it can image a full Morgan. No, I would not recommend it if you have a decent digital camera. Dino-Lite is a great little detail imager but a lousy camera, even the better models. I am intrigued by their nmodel with the light diffuser. Anyone have and/or tried one of those? Would be nice if those nasty LED reflections could be controlled.

A six inch extension tube screws into the top of the post in the picture if you want extra height but considering we will use it mostly for Kennedy, Franklin, Walkers and Early Comm - it works for us without the extension.

I paid $350 for the Microscope camera and mini tripod.

First impressions, WOW this critter is amazing for VERY close up work. But if you want to photograph the whole coin you better be ready to experiment.

The Controls, plenty of adjustments, more than most people will ever need.

Here are some photos of a 2007 Lincoln Cent. The only thing that is changed throughout the photos is the type of lighting. No Photoshop edditing was done other than cropping the image.

LED Light Emitting Diode (the unit has them built in, you can turn them on and off) I do not like the type of light they produce.

I am happy with mine. It gets real close up for detail and I like how it shows up on my computer.

I have one of those Dino Light gizmos, and it is great for taking extreme close-up pictures of small portion of a coin and decent for taking pictures of raw coins, although I have a lot of trouble with the white balance and color. The lights that come with it are useless for slabs because the glare just reflects back into the lens.

What do you guys use for light sources? My old high intensity light does not work with this camera. I asked the guy at the FUN show, but he was not helpful.

  • I usually turn the Dinolite LED's off altogether and use a single 16W daylight fluorescent (5000°K) flood bulb if I'm trying to shoot anything but closeups. I think it's equivalent to a 65-75W incandescent flood. After reading what Mark Goodman said about lighting I let it warm up for 10 minutes or so before taking photos. It does pretty good, but you usually do still have to do some adjustment with a photo editor. The Dinolite I use is the AM411T model.
