What are the key cards to look for in a box of 1988 topps football?

I am looking to buy a box of cheap football from back when I collected as a kid. I believe BBCE has 88 Topps FB for around $12.00. What cards should I be looking for in this box? I know Bo Jackson's rc but what else is there in that year. Are there any error cards to look for? Or is there another box in that price range that can net better cards for the $. I am also picking up a wax box of 89 Fleer baseball, but besides that is there anything with more bang for the buck? Thanks

i recall Christian Okoye being another popular card from that year. I always kind of liked that design.

I personally like 87 Topps Football. Its a bit more expensive but much better cards.

In 88, I think its also Kevin Greene's rookie. Even psa 10s from 88 go for NOTHING. A bit more of a chance of better money, even with a Jerry Rice...thats his second year card and a great action shot.

87 also has Doug Flutie Rookie, Jim Kelly Rookie, Randall Cunningham Rookie, and Steve Young's second year card.

I dont think there are errors to look for in either.

I think 88 was the coolest design of any 80s Topps football set. At one time, that was a really popular set. Yeah, the BO and Vinny RCs were hot. Too bad it's pretty much worthless now.

It also includes the RC's of Sam Mills and Kevin Greene.

Greene was selected to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team and is a member of the Rams All-Time team on the registry.

Mills is the only player elected to the Carolina Panthers Hall of Honor and his uniform number (#51) has been retired by the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers. He eventually will be part of a few different registry sets.

I have a little over 10% of the set graded and rank #4 on the registry.

There was somebody on these boards that was doing an all PSA 10 set. Cannot remember his ID, but I believe he was an Indians fan??

the 88 Topps Football should give you one of the very best chances to put together a complete set from one box

You could buy a cello box and save the packs with stars on top and open the rest, buy a few PSA 10s for $3 and have an exhaustive collection from that one set. Binder and pages would be the biggest expense

Another one time hot rookie card in that set was Neal Anderson. I used to argue that he was a better all around back then Barry Sanders! How did that turn out?

I guess there is also the Cornelius Bennett, Wade Wilson, Seth Joyner and Chris Doleman RCs....but these would not count as "key cards."

Great design IMHO. I have a PSA 10 Joe Montana I picked up for under $15 on Ebay recently. Classic pose of a great QB.

Good choice for a fun rip of 80's wax. Good luck with it.

I never buy football ever, but I saw a 88 wax box for $10 at shopko awhile back and couldnt resist. Yes you can get a complete set out of one wax box.

If your looking for star players you cant beat the price

    Randall Cunningham
    Steve Young
    Phil Simms
    Steve Largent
    Warren Moon
    Tony Dorsett
    Bo Jackson
    John Elway
    Jerry Rice
    Steve Young
    Lawrence Taylor
    Walter Payton
    Reggie White
    Dan Marino
    Joe Montana
    Marcus Allen
And none other than the second year card of "The" Chuck Long

I remember that. Didn't you and a buddy team up for the TTM's? This would be a perfect set to do it with.

yep, me a friend from Scn teamed up to get the set auto'ed. There are a few tough autos from the set, Most notably Stacy Toran.
every now and then I still get a card back signed from the set after almost a year.
