A little OT, but gold just crossed over $1200

Interesting...
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.
Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.

    Not OT at all.
And there goes another big round number hurdle.
    When in doubt, don't.

Whereas the majority of postings about precious metals would best be put on the PM forum, hitting $1200 is extemely significant and I find it OK that it made the US Coin forum.

I think it belongs everywhere. It is certainly of interest to gold coin collectors. Have you ever vistited the PM forum? I find it a strange place that I visit as little as possible.

The price of gold is relative to numismatics. Today we bought in a handful of $5 Indians. Back when gold was $300/ oz., four of the five coins had significant date-and-mintmark premiums. Today, as I was pricing them up, one of them had about a $15 premium, and the other three non-1909D's are all common dates.

The same think applies with $20 Saints. Dates in the teens that used to bring a premium now do not......thanks to $1200 gold.

The very real fact is most people have their savings and investments in greenbacks, while only a small percentage is in precious metals. So yes, most would agree with this statement.

But where are the $1600 ms65 saints now? They were $1600 last time gold was hovering around $1000. Heck, any ms65 widget Saints under 2k? Nope.

Buys on the proof AGE's with packaging are $2075-$2125. MS65 Saints may be widgets but they are holding their own with respect to the gold price bringing over a 2X premium to spot. Fwiw as they keep that >2X premium they do not qualify as bullion under the PA2 guidelines.

Sorry, but I already shipped out all my $20 Libs and Saints in a $CASH4GOLD package. I'm just waiting to find out how much they'll give me. Next, I'm going to sell all my scrap jewelry at a gold party.

Of course I am in favor in that. We have not had a balanced budget with a surplus in about 9-10 years...

That was smoke and mirrors. If one takes out the borrowed social security payments and other such tricks, we haven't seen a balanced budget since Andrew Jackson.

If you think $1200 is good... wait until next year when it reaches $1500... and the following year when it breaks the $2000 mark.

Some people have the thought that gold will eventually be (or could go) to the $5K level... if the $ is weak, the gold keeps going higher.

Hope is not a plan. "Looking forward to..." isn't a plan. Cheerleading is not a plan. You can prepare for gold prices which are out of your control or you can ignore them and complain about a weak dollar. I chose to make a bet on gold and I listen to the guys who seem to have a good handle on it over at the PM forum and I try to maximize my wealth and ability to buy coins....That's my plan. Not meaning to be harsh. --Jerry

I never said I wanted 5K gold... and I have no gold in my portfolio. The issue is, as long as the $ is weak, gold will continue to go up. As long as the US government keeps printing money with record deficits, gold will continue to go up.

You think we're cheerleaders. We're not. We're making our best guess on the real future, not some game. The poster didn't say he wants $5k gold. He says he predicts $5k gold. So he is making plans for $5k gold--which probably includes owning as much as possible...He's making a friendly suggestion that the rest of us should too.

Now wisdom is knowing if his advice is correct or those thinking that "Gold has reached it's highs for some time" are right. This isn't a game. You have to play with real money. --Jerry

PS: and choosing not to play is indeed playing, you're making a bet on the FRN.

Well said Jerry. Gold is up another $15 in the last several minutes actually to $1215. Why is this happening (gold going up in an orderly fashion) is the question I think one should be asking themselves. A lot of folks will not examine that question honestly for many reasons or others will choice to simply ignore it. What is raising gold trying to tell you? I have many "clients" that I've tried to put into gold $700 dollars ago. They told me it was to expensive then and they tell me it's too expensive now. Thankfully, many also listened. To twine ownself be true. I still recommend everybody protect themselves with some bullion as wealth insurance. Gold imo is still cheap. Bullion in adddition to rare coins (which I love) can be fun....here is a fun set I enjoy looking at from time to time. A one ounce lunar set purchased in late 2006. MJ
