NEWP: 1863 Mexican 8 Real

After being shut out at FUN/NYC, I was able to make the world travels collection grow by 20% yesterday with this pick up from CRO. Very lovely original coin, lots of flash and LOTS going on with it. Die polish lines are all over the coin, there is die rust as well as planchet issues. Mexico at that time was not super concerned with quality control. I have been searching a LONG time to find an originally toned 8 Real. Chalk it up to the first coin pick of 2013.

Beats 2012 when I was at sea most of the year and felt pretty removed from the hobby.

I put together this page showing the set as it exists now. Still looking for Canada, Jamaica, UAE, Bahrain, Thailand, Luxembourg, Japan and Belgium, but it is starting to come together!

Nice addition. I am surprised it sat on eBay for almost a year at $1,350 BIN as PCGS green label MS65 before CRO bought it. Is it still in the same green label holder?

It is the same one as far as I know. That is very strong money for a 65, especially since wholesale levels for gems are around 850$, but they don't all look like this one.

It's a coin with killer eye appeal. Especially for the series that usually comes blast white in high grade PCGS holders. There were a few times I almost pulled a tigger on it myself for the type set. If it was a portrait 8R with the same features, I would've paid the premium gladly.

Lux seems to be a tough one. Maybe you can find a super Wenceslas II Gros, or other AU+ to Unc. 14th c. coin.

I know this coin very well.

I bought it from a coin shop in Nampa, Idaho sometime around February 2003. I then sold it on eBay about 4 years later.
The coinlieutenant and I have always seen eye to eye on coins. Aye, aye John.

This coin gets around, it was offered to me for $1150 about a month ago right before someone hit BIN on eBay. I have small regrets. Doesn't make any sense why this one would bounce around so much.

A coin that appealed to this many collectors is a good thing, in my opinion.

It's a great coin. Part of me wishes I still had it. However, since it didn't fit perfectly into my collection, I decided to sell and redeploy into other areas.
