Newp: 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar (w/grading poll)

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,673 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've wanted a pretty Pilgrim for a while, since I'm a descendant of William Bradford, who's featured on the obverse.

Family lore said my grandmother had a silver candlestick which had belonged to him, but I never saw it when her estate was divided up, so that could have been mere rumor.

So I'll settle for a silver coin, instead. I think this one is pretty nice. You?

For the record, I voted the Neutral option, as I do more often than not in my own polls.

I know the coin so I didn't vote.
I will say that I really like it and considered giving it a home myself.

I think that has the ideal look for a classic commem and especially for that design. Congrats!

There are things about the coin I like and don't like. I would be really curious how it would grade. My vote was a little more conservative than some of the optimistic posters.

I have no problem being wrong...from the larger picture it looked like there was some wear on the coin...so I went with AU 55.

If you haven't graded yet...click to the larger photo and see if you agree with me.

The coin is in a TPG holder.

Should I reveal that yet, or wait a bit?

My favorite classic commem design. I went with 65 but these are tough to grade. I've seen gorgeous examples in 63 holders and outright ugly ones in 65 holders.

Well, LordM, my 1st cousin, a few times removed created the design - Cyrus Dallin. It's fun to have a person connection.

Cool about your relation to the Governor.

Whatever the grade, it's very attractive.

Love the peripheral toning and overall look. I voted 64, having no real experience with commemorative coinage.

Hard to grade w/o close up photos, but I'll venture either 64 or 58.

I like the coin in general.

I am not a competent grader, but know what I like.
I like that. The toning is very nice and the reverse luster is killer.

That's a beaut Lord M...Very attractive toning but because of the subdued luster I went 63. I also love this design and would be happy to add this one to my collection. I'll also say grading by an image is VERY tough for me. Congrats on such a nice piece!! image

The large photos show field scuffing which should limit it to 62-64 range.

I'll go for the middle of that with MS63.

I went with 66. The coin seems to have good luster, great strike and color.

I voted 64+, but it's hard to grade toned coins like that from a pic.

But I do know it is a beautiful coin.

    I love the F12 votes!image

I said MS64. Couldn't decide on a + or not so I just said 64+ overall. It IS a darn nice looking coin, I think the toning will bump it to the PQ status it deserves.

Grading uncirc coins via photo is a crap shoot....

So, I took my shot, and went with 65. Even if it's 64 by strike/luster, the toning probably knocked it up a notch.

(Of course, 58 is always a possibility....)

    Grade revealed here.

Again, I've posted the coin in a second thread, so I can link it to my Box of 20 thread but keep this poll thread separate. (Sorry if that seems redundant.)

Ashamed to say I don't know. I was always told we were descendants of William Bradford and of the two Adams presidents. Can't recall ever actually seeing the whole geneaology mapped out. There's one of my Robertson cousins who has an extensive website, but I'd be related to Bradford through my maternal grandmother, whose maiden name was Radeker.

Several ancients, including my Caligula VESTA as. Incoming is another ancient (the new avatar coin). And the Dahlonega half-eagle which also came from Illini420. And the Monitor CWT.

So I have to do quite a bit of updating to the Box of 20 thread.
